MP7 to MPC Midi Connection

yo what up yall? Im new to midi conmnections. Im trying to hook up my MP-7 to my MPC 1000 midi style. All I really want to be able to do is play the notes on my MP-7 and send them into the MPC sequencer, or maybe even sequence a melody on the MP7 and then send it into the MPC to layer over top some drums. I gave it a go for about an hour yesterday, but all I would get after multiple tries was the most irritating scratchy noise that forced me to power down everything....again, Im new to midi, so sorry if this questions sounds ridonkulous. peace.

Yo, thats not ridiculous. I have the same set up, the midi on the mp-7 really sucks. I have got it figured out though, set the mpc midi setting to out A or B (whichever you use), plug in to the mp 7. Next go to the mp 7 midi screen and find, "rechannelize input" there should be three options there. My screen on the mp 7 is kind of messed up, but i turned the wheel to third option and thats where it is set. Now once thats setup, go to the mpc, make sure the program is set to "off". If you look to the right of that you will see where it says "mute" and "midi". Turn midi on 1A or 1B depending on where your coming out from. 1A-16A (or B) will control tracks 1B-16B on the mp7. I've had that same problem since i've had my mp7. I can almost garuantee that whatever your doing wrong has nothing to do with the mpc.

That is for the mpc being the sequencer, I would not suggest using the mp7 as the sequencer, Its just a headache.

this did not work man....i did everything you had suggested 3 or 4 times...The MIDI light flashes when i hit a preset, but Im getting no sound out of my monitors. So, this is what I have set up...my MP-7 with a midi cable going from its out to the MPCs in. MPCs outs going to a soundcard, and the soundcard sending out the signal to my monitors. MPC works fine, but im really looking to be able to sequence those MP7 sounds into my MPC...anyone else have a suggestion...please help...thanks.

All I can think of right now is to double-check you're not getting into a MIDI loop, where a note goes round and round between the two devices. See MPC1000 manual pg 46 for how to turn "Soft Thru" off, or the equivalent MP-7 feature...

face : your not thinking sound goes through the midi cable are you? midi only handles control info, like when you play a note...not the actual sounds.

yea...im pretty new to the whole concept of midi...well....I thought that the internal sounds of the mp-7 could be sequenced by the MPCs sequencer......the mp7 would be the piece actually playing the sounds, but it would be transmitting the necessary info to the mpc, thus far I haven't been able to hear any of the presets from the mp7, on either end.....it was wierd last night, I thought I had all of the connections correct, and went to bang away on the MP7, and I was hearing some of the samples from the mpc....maybe i need to have a seperate pair of speakers for the mp7, and route the midi back through the MP7?? I got a headache.

It's OK as long as you never confuse audio with MIDI - MIDI is just instructions like "play note C1" etc. which the MP-7 (in this scenario) "interprets" and plays the sounds.

If you hook up the MP7 audio outs to the MPC Record In, you will only hear something when the MPC is in Record mode. They're not "Mix In" ports, they're only for sampling. (And you should never need to sample the MP-7 sounds, you Have the MP-7 right there.)

Your last sentence is almost the answer. Start off with a simple setup:
- Use the MPC to generate MIDI (hit pads, use the sequencer) - on MIDI Out Port 1. On the Main page, MPC Track section , change the MIDI channel for the Track to 1A.
- the MP-7's MIDI In port receives the MIDI and plays the sounds on its own audio outs, so (like you say) you still need some way of listening to the MP-7 = amp, mixer, or just 'phones.

The manuals for the MPC and MP-7 do have some basic MIDI teaching material to check out. I would just say to keep the goal in mind - what sounds do you want coming out of which box? Work backwards from there. Example:
- say MP-7 program 42 has the killer bass drum sound.
- The pads or sequencer needs to send the right MIDI to generate that sound.
- If you use the MP-7 pads or sequencer, it's simple. If you use the MPC pads or sequencer, things need to be set up:
- the MPC must send the right MIDI note (e.g. 36) on the right Channel (e.g. 10) on the right Port (e.g. A).
- You can change the Note number in the Program (for Pads) and the Sequencer. (Or use defaults: Pad A02 = MIDI note 36).
- You select the MIDI Channel & Out at the Sequence Track level (on the Main page). (This defaults to OFF = don't send MIDI). These settings must be right even if you aren't sequencing, just playing live.
- the MP-7 must be ready to receive on the same channel (10), wired up right (MPC MIDI Out A -> MP-7 MIDI IN)

yo man...thanks for putting some time into that...I appreciate it. I checked the MIDI sections in both of those manuals, and they were pretty worthless, and I couldnt get much from them, especially the MP7 manual...anyways, thanks again....im gonna go noodle.

THE WAY I HAVE SET UP IS...THE MIDI OUT FROM A MIDI CONTROLLER KEYBOARD IS GOING TO THE MIDI IN (A) ON THE MPC 1000. THE MIDI OUT (A) ON THE MPC 1000 IS GOING TO MIDI IN ON THE MP7... THEN AS YOU RECORD EACH TRACK ON THE MPC 1000.... SCROLL TO MIDI SCROLL THE PROGRAM TO OFF (OR BLANK) AND THEN CURSOR TO THE RIGHT.. .WHEN YOU TURN THE WHEEL ON THE MPC 1000 YOU SEE IT CHANGE FROM 1A, 2A, 3A, ETC.. THOSE ARE THE TRACKS ON THE MP7....IF THIS DOESN'T WORK LET ME KNOW.... BUT IT WORKS FOR ME

This is simple. Check it like dude was saying. MIDI is like a remote control. Thats it. It has nothing to do with audio. You need a mixer. See the MP-7 is a sound module. It makes sounds. The MPC controls that MOdule. So the MPC is playing those sounds. Get it? MPC is like "play that bass for two secs, okay stop) thats it. You need to get a mixer to get the MPC on on channel and the MP-7s audio outs on the other. The mpc cannot play the MP-7s sound from outta the MPCs outputs. The sound must come from the MP7 outs.
Buy a cheap DJ mixer.
