SMPTE What the **** is it?

Anyone? I know it is time code for movies and a standard but could someone tell me what I would use it for in my lab?

I was reading through this, it should give you a clear picture of it.
I would just use Midi instead.

I use to use it with my sansung 6 track recorder and also with my tascam 488 mkII...................what it would do is lay a signal on the last track and it would trigger my machines so everything would be in sync.......this way back then, after I layed out the vocals, I could just hit the play button on the recorder and copy everything to my 2 track master......it was designed for films but you know us we find a way to use everything
