A workstation (keyboard) is usually an all in one package. They come with a standard sampler, sequencer, internal effects and 500 plus synth sounds. The mpc is a sampler with, internal effects and a powerful sequencer. The mpc is highly recommonded for dance music because of the sequencer's swing features-in other words, it kicks azz. The mpc only comes with a hundred plus stock sounds. The rest you have to sample or purchase external sound modules. The mpc can control two or four synth modules and/or a workstation, with ease, through midi. Versus the workstation, which is designed to work more as a stand alone unit. In the long run, IMO the mpc is the most versatile.
As far as which mpc. It depends on your buget and needs. The 2500 has the most features between the three. The 1000 was designed to be more portable. The 2500 and 1000 are designed to interact with a computer or stand alone. You can add an internal harddrive to ether one. The 2000xl freatures are between the two. Although most of the xl optional upgrades are external, if that matters..
