Why has this been the level of discussion in the 500 sub forum for as long as it's been around? :?

try this:

assign 2 samples to the pads.
record a track within a sequence.
make sure you record the 2 pads simultanious, like on 1.00.00.
in stepedit will appear \/a1 ( scroll by selecting the arrow to select A2)
if you delete the upper pad action (in this case a1), the mpc will delete all sequences and songs in the memory, only the pgms and sounds will remain in the memory.

I think this would be the first step (and reason) to update the os.

Have you contacted Akai to report the bug?

Well, the way I see it is, as a developer of high end, niched, products (which, after all, the MPC range, even the 500 is, compared to say amount of bang for your bucks using a laptop and Live) you have two choises when it comes to developing and improving your products.

One option is to try to get as much as possible out of each and every product, gradually improving and refining it, thereby attracting new buyers even years after the initial release, and also, keeping your user base loyal, willing to buy your next piece of equipment, and recommending your equipment. This is the path taken by companies like Clavia, Elektron, DaveSmith instruments among others, not to mention Universal Audio.

The other path is saying "This product is released, now we drop it. It is as it is, and you will have to live with workarounds. We will likely not improve it further, even if the cost of the improvement is small, and the user benefit big".

Now, I have been in contact with Akai regarding the future of the 500. Most of it sounds pretty hopefull at least, but then there is the occasional lapse like "the 500 won't get recordable track mutes because then it would compete with the 2500".

The 500 is my first MPC, bought simply to have a portable, fun to use, drum machine. (I was actually considering getting a 2500 for studio use as well.) However, the 500 seems pretty crippled in the creative/tweakability area, and probably without any real reason. I doubt that a HP filter would use more DSP than a low pass. Also, I seriously doubt that it wouldn't be possible to cram a filter env and a lfo in there. If they were optional, and stole a few voices when used, fine by me. All l'm saying is that at the moment, it feels like the 500 is far behind what it could be. Will be interresting to see what the future holds. This will also pretty much decide weather I will buy anything else from Akai or not.

At the moment, if Elektron released a battery power option for the MachineDrum UW, my 500 would be a gonner in an instant...

This thread, page five... ;o)

With hopefull, I mean that they added stuff to the "possible improvements" list, and didn't reply "The 500 is as it is, scram"...

Three things I would like to see

1. When copying a sequence, the OS automatically asks you if you want to place it into the next available sequence (just like the 1000).

2. You can go 'around the world' so to speak when accessing a memory card, that is, you can go both backwards and forwards on your folders. It helps when you have about 100 folders and you want to get to number 100, that way either way you turn the data wheel it will take you half the time

3. When loading samples, the machine doesnt take you back to the beginning folder after you load a sample.

3: When loading/assigning samples, the mpc doesn't remember the last loaded sample position.

Say that i load samples from a folder with 100-something samples (or assign samples to a program, after loading the entire folder). Then, for each sample I want to load/assign, I have to scroll from the beginning of the list, instead of the mpc just remembering the last sample loaded and starting from there.

This was debated hotly as to how it should work when the system was in development. It was felt that given the size of the screen, access from the beginning of the list was preferable.

Why would I want to access the list from the begining, I've already seen those samples!!1 :x

Perhaps, if more people would email akai about this, they would realize their misstake.

I don't think it would be that hard to make this a user selectable option in the "other" menu...
