Hi-Hats: Before, After, or During?

How many of you record your hi-hats while recording your kicks and snares, ie make the whole beat at once?
Its easy to record kick and snare and then place the hi-hats on the second go around, but I want to take it to the next level and record the whole thing at once.
For example, play the kick and snare with one hand while playing the high hat with the other. Im having problems pulling this off though.
Any tips?

that would actually be difficult to pull off. i've tried that and the timing was allll off. you gotta be reeeall focused to pull that off

I do it like this.....I have the beat in my head already before I start. I know how i want my drums to sound. So i make the sound of the hats and snare wit my mouth while I record the kicks. THEN i do the hihats...Then comes my snare.....since the snares are easiest to place (to me). And whateva else i wanna put in it like tambourines shakers crash rimshots whateva. then i listen to it (i still got my beat in my head) and I adjust anything I need to from there....thats an easy way to do it...

I tried doin that ish. I seen some guy from Rolad do that ish no prob. Practice makes Perfect.

Learn how to play the drums, it will come easy, I use the same technique

ive gotten pretty good at playing the kick, snare, high hat, and open high hat all at once! I dont know sometimes i just wanna mess with the mp, but i dont wanna make a beat, so i just jam out. I can even throw a sample in there every now and then. As far as playing in front of a crowd???id be scared to flowers up !!!!!!! If you were to record your drumtrack like this though, all those sounds would be on one track. You would probably wanna put them on their own tracks afterwards anyway , (i think that can be done) so why waste the time??? Hey maybe you want all your drums on one track though.

I do this alot. True. You have to be drummer to pull this off. Nothin to it

You could do it if you had one pad that was a snare, then a pad that was a snare and hihat in the same hit, a pad with hihat, a pad with kick and hat, and a kick pad. That way you wouldn't have to hit the snare and hat pad at the same time or the kick and hat at the same time. Use one hand for snare and the other for kick and alternate between with the hat. Am I making sense?

If you could pull this off it would be real impressive. Okay, now I have to practice.

how do you assign 2 sounds to one pad?

Program Mode down at the bottom where it says MODE:Normal, turn the data wheel to the right to Simult then assign the pad you want to play with that pad. You can assign up to two.

I do this all the time with breakbeats. Just cut it up and replay back kick (w/Hat) then Hat then Snare (w/hat) then hat. Do it again.

So can you play drums live like a drummer? I have to learn to do this. You could actually replace a drummer in a band with just your MPC. Wouldn't that be a trip to go see a band and instead of a drummer you see a guy standing behind an MPC?

I don't know, to me, that would look pretty lame, unless the dude broke out with a break and did all kinds of funky sh*t. Then I would be impressed.

i saw a concert last year, with a drummer who also used a laptop and one of those mpc-pads(the pads without the actual mpc).. anyway, he was really rocking them.. actually, when i think of it, that might be the coolest drummer i have ever seen...

anyway, i use an asr10: hihats first, then snare, and after i put the main sample in, i record the bassdrums..

No you dont actually have to assign to different pads

I have one pad for hat, one for kick, and one for snare

I just play it like how a drummer would, I still do go back over to do ghosting for my kicks to get them smoother
