how can i start my own publishing? is this a good move for my record label to also have our own publishing how do i go about doin this? thanks
you need to be registered with either BMI or ASCAP, You can sign up as a writer first to later collect royalties on music you have produced however to own a publishing company you must have music that has been aired on either television, Films or radio play. (Not sure if college radio qualifies) Once you have proven that you meet these requirements you can form your own company. Until then you are at the mercy of the major label that reps you (or indy label that has an existing publishing company)
Its tough and expensive to form a publishing company. But worth it ONLY if you have works that have been aired film,tv or radio).
Keep in mind that as a registered writer you receive a 50/50 split with the publishing company that reps you. (If none reps you then BMI or ASCAP keeps the money) Once you own ayour own pub. company you get both your writers and publishing splits. (Again ONLY if your tunes are getting airplay)
