mpc 2000xl users-making a beat progess help

A Question for all the mpc 2000xl beat makers, how do u go about making a beat? how do u start? lay down drums first? sample? also how do u do it,do u do it in song mode? explain ur methods

There really isn't a rule. You can start with a drum pattern, sometimes I start with a synth melody or a smple then add drums to it. I also record a 4 to 8 bar pattern in sequence mode then I will add my intro, breakdown and hook from there.

Usually I first built the basis. Meaning the main samples and a bassline. From there I go onto looking for good drum sounds to use that fit the basis well. When I got my basic drum pattern I look for some variation on the main theme. After that I look for other sounds like trumpet stabs, piano's and such that go nicely with the rest and switch some stuff around so I get some structure into everything. Optionally I look for some good samples to cut with.

After that I track everything to cubase and try to mix/master my stuff...

Heres how I construct a beat,most of the time.
Find a loop,usually an 8 beat count,then chop it up into 1/16 then add fx and adjust the pitch or something. I don't sequence the sample until I have the drums though.I
spend a lot of time processing drums,cuz i think thats what I need the most work on.After the drums comes the bass then the sample sequence.
I start with the 4 bar loop with like 3 or 4 loop variations then seperate them into different sequences and link them with song mode.

keep in mind techniques vary depending on the beat. generally if i have no idea what samples im working with. Ill start with a basic hi hat and snare to get my rhthm going. (usually will go back and edit in and out drums) from there i find a sample, chop it up and start layering. from there i just start putting the peices together. Add the kick bass ect..
