MPC VS RACK MOUNT - ANY ADVICE?

Yo! I'm an 3000XL rack mount user, and use my akai predominantly as a drum machine (Cutting up beats via ReCycle, andthen sending it over via scsii). But I am about to buy a G5, which are not scsii compatible, but are USB machines. Someone suggested I buy an MPC1000 as this has usb etc, and bad ass quantize functions.

This sounds good to me, but what functions will I lose/gain if I replace the rack mount for the MPC. And can I still sequence on the computer with an mpc or is it all done on the machine itself? Basically I just need some info on these lil bad boys before I buy one, and i thought Id ask fellow users first

Hello,

Research the akai z8. If you are going to sequence on the computer, this option makes the most sense. You can use recycle, and export as an AKP file. Then use AK.sys to tranfer sound to Z8. I have an s3000xl, and formerly used scsi to transfer w/ recycle. Now I have mpc4000. works great.
No Need to buy mpc, and z8 will load all of your s3000 sounds. Z4 or Z8 = roughly same price as MPC1000.

i would recommend the s5000 i have been using that, you can drag your sounds and stuff into the sampler from the computer and then back the stuff up on your computer using usb, i love it to death, but rents here. i would be willin to sell mine for 650. it comes with the memory maxed at 256 and the usb card already installed. check it out man. send me an email or something [email protected]

i dont use it much now cuz i just got the 1000 but the the usb doesnt work like the s5000.

Nice. Thanks peeps. I have since spoken to Apple and they seem to say that scsi will work fine, so I might not have to switch. But having looked into the MPC now I might just get one, as programming beats by ear instead of sight (ie sequencing) has gotta be a good idea.

Few more questions though...Am I sampling things into the MPC as I would the rack mount? How do I get the beats to run with all my audio? If I've played my bass and keys into logic how would i time up the beats that are coming from the MPC, as you're not sequencing them any longer on the computer right? Basically I'm not sure how an MPC would run within my current setup, so any advice helpful.

right. if you're used to using a real sampler, the MPC1k will be a little bit restrictive and disappointing, because it doesn't really work like one. it's more like a classic MPC sequencer and NI's Battery in a box, so switching from an s3000 to Battery-level functionality would be a step *down* in firepower. I'd say check out the s5k or z-series.

Alternately, on a G5 you could probably run NI Kontakt quite comfortably...

Sure, Scsi will work fine on a G5. However, the newest version of recycle for , and the only version that will run in OSX, does not support scsi tranfers.
