here's a very simple tip that usually allows me to chop faster than i would with AUTO or with SLICE.
0 - sample a nice phrase sample. it doesn't have to be a loop, but for the sake of this experiment make it a loop.
1 - enter chop.
2 - hit slice.
3 - turn slice all the way down to 2.
now - you have 2 halves of 1 sample. play both sides. you may notice that 1 side contains more notes than the other - that is, the end point of the 1st slice contains part of the 2nd half of the sample, melodically. you follow me? essentially, since your loop is in "human" time, not machine time, slicing your sample into perfect halves/fourths/eighths etc won't work because your slices will contain tiny pieces of notes that belong in other slices. basically, your chops will be a bit messy.
however, here's where the divide comes in. take the END POINT of slice 1 and move it to the "aural" half of your sample, NOT the absolute half. now, if you were to hit pad 13 LOOP, each half should loop perfectly with no overlap. you follow? essentially you've divided the sample in 2, compensating for the human timing. so basically, all this text above for yes, two steps. i just had to do my best to explain it right.
NOW. on each half, divide again. same process. divide in half, compensate for human timing. the nice thing is that having compensated 1ce, you're already closer to the timing of the existing sample - you're "AUTOmatically" near the transient point, so to say.
