I don't really feel that the 500 needs a new os. I plan on waiting to see what AKAI does with the OS upgrade first. There are only a few issues I see that need resolving, otherwise the OS is pretty solid

My 500 says version 1.0. Is there an upgrade to that?

I agree with Lithion, I'd like to see what Akai does first (and hopefully they give us at least one more OS version before getting distracted by some shiny new thing). Given the limitations on RAM/processing in the 500, I'm not sure it'd be good to throw as much cool stuff as you can fit in to it and risk hurting overall performance. I'd just like to see some of the current stuff tidied up.

it could make the machine more worthwhile to folks who have other mpcs...beefing up the 500's os could bring the machine to its own.

it could probably up your resolution from 2 line to 3 line, and probably add some rudimentary wav image, maybe even a grid edit.

i don't know if it's gonna happen though as there's not a huge demand. 500s don't exactly appear to be hotcakes, unfortunately.

i think that's fixed unfortunately, the 500's LCD has 2x20 characters compared with the 1k's LCD which has 240x64 pixels. the 500's is a character display, the 1k's is a graphical display.

That would be the tiniest grid editor ever!

But for real, I agree with what I think nym is getting at, the 500 is not ideal for chopping. Chopping on the computer then editing on 500 is the easiest way to go. Although chopping on the 500 is possible, its done more by ear than by waveform.
