a couple notes on multisamples in the mpc 1000
i turn every single sample i get into what equates to multisamples in the mpc. especially for drums. yes, it does take time and work, but not much if you've got fast fingers.
2nd - i'd rather have a multisample that doesn't ever pitch 1 wav over a couple notes. at all. i know it must be done sometimes, and in some cases you can't tell, but i avoid that shit if at all possible. i don't like reason patches that do it too much either, but the combinator is good for getting around it.
as for the space issue - a full scale multisampled is HUGE, as love said. however, if you make a multisample pgm of only your working scale, you're cutting out dosens of files you end up not using. this results in a much smaller pgm and you can fit tons into the mpc.
next - one thing that the mpc does which the nnxt does not do is velocity specific layer playing. ie, i can put 4 oneshots of the same note on 1 pad and have each one progressively triggered by harder hits. this is excellent and i love doing it for drums and struck string stuff as well.
most of my multisamples come from records and vhs - drum or otherwise. since i sample only open samples for the most part, once chopped, every single note gets placed onto the pads. sampels of the same notes get put on the same pads according to their hardness or softness relative to their brother samples. and so on. i end up with a multisampled pgm locked into whatever scale the original song was in. often i deviate from this preset scale by pitching the entire pgm up or down. sometimes i pitch individual ones separate from the group but not often cuz i don't like hearing the background noise (hiss, etc) get pitched different than the rest.
between that and simulations of other playing nuances, like velocity to attack and velocity to filter so that softer hits trigger more dampened, "brushed" sounding samples, you have yourself a thoroughly convincing multisample pgm. a drummer could never tell the difference if i was determined to make an ultimately realistic drum beat.
for this purpose, the mpc is far better than multisampled patches from reason or any other module i've experienced - such patches are MUCH better for supplimental melody, harmony, interpolation, etc...but i very rarely use them for lead melodies - 1, because i like the limitation of an open sample turned multisample and 2, because when a sampler is your instrument, the sample becomes your string or drum or reed or w/e.

most the time, that's already done for you w/ any open sample from record, vhs, your friend playing guitar, etc. often, there's no point in sampling the full scale when you are only gonna be using X number of the notes.
