file name problem(maybe)

ok i have alot of different drum kits on my computer and i just got a external zip drive for my computer and i'm trying to dumpall my drums onto disks so i can load them on my mpc and i'm having a couple of problems doing this...........my first problem is that some of my files have the same names as others that i'm trying to put on the same disk.........is there an easy way to get around this or am i gonna have to go back and rename the certain files?theres a total of 533 files so it's not that i'm being lazy,theres just gotta be an easier way


second problem is that when i try to dump my files on a disk it loads about half of the folder and then gives me a error message........what could be the problem?i know the disk isn't full so i was thinking it may be the file name length..............i have a lot(almost all) of files that have long file names.....1 folder in particular is called 300 breaks and all the files exceed the 8 character file name limit of the mpc...........does this make a difference?could it be because i'm trying to transfer them all at once?any help?

Try transfering them in parts. It obviously stops on a particular file and has problem with it. If you are using windows, that's got to an issue, cause when you copy multiple files and it finds an error in one of them, it will automatically stop copying.

About these long file names - there are programs that can do it for you. You make something like a template of name and they just add numbers at the end. You can even use some of photo editor progrmas, they have built in options for multiple file names changing. I tried that and it works just fine.

By the way, maybe the problem is not a name but the file itself. Remember, they have to ba all 16 bit, 44 kHz.

thanks i'll try all those suggestions..................should my zip disk be formatted a certain way?it's in FAT format right now

damn i formatted to FAT32 just to see if that would work and to my surprise all the files loaded but the disk couldnt be read by the mpc!!!!!!!!!!!!fu<k this is frustrating

You should be formatting to FAT16 not FAT 32. I think it's called simply FAT on some versions of windows.

As Nicole said there is a limitaton from the old pre-windows DOS days of only allowing eight character names. Windows also has a nasty habit of truncating the names of filenames over eight characters and inserting a "~" to denote that it has been abbreviated. I always had a problem on the 2000 classic when trying to load a /wav or .snd file with "~" character in the filename.

As per Nicole's suggestion get a batch renamer to rename the files. The good batch renamers will allow you to add sequential numeric additions to the filename e.g kik01, kik02, kik03. etc. etc.

i knew fat32 wouldnt work but i decided to try it and see what happened anmd to make sure my disk itself wasnt damaged..........the problem is on FAT format my folder will only get loaded halfway onto the diskand then give me a "file or directory can not be created" error message and i'm trying to get my whole 67 mb folder onto a 250 mb zip disk


while when i formatted the same disk to FAT32 i didnt get said error message


whats the problem here

EXACTLY how many files are you trying to place on the root drive of that disk?

fat/fat16 limitation is 512 files on root directory.
