My MPC 500 = Pwned

I went to work the other day. I was going to bring my 500, but actually declined because I knew I was going to be working with a lot of sequence editing, step editing and resampling. So instead I took the 1K in my backpack, because its so much f*&?ing easier to do on the 1k. Ohh how very useless the portability factor of the 500 has become.

Still, if you are going somewhere that doesn't have outlet power, it will still be useful. Also, the beat I was working with I origionally sampled, chopped and created on it, so the 500 is very easy to actually create the beat in the first place on, just not so much for fine tuning. I think I just need to come to grips with the idea that I might have wasted 750 bucks... argh.

maybe you need to give your 500 some time to learn it , because its a bit different then the other mpc's. I have my mpc2000xl for the 6th year now and I almost paniced after I bought the mpc500.

When You know your mpc like the back of your hand you become a part of it, Nah mean?

+ another thing that I just thought of the other day was...
the mpc 500 is the smallest in the family.. it will never be a
mpc 1000, mpc2000 or mpc 2500. The mpc 500 has less pads, less outputs, less visual (the screen) even if its still a mpc.

I'm starting to agree that the 500 when compared to my 2500 makes working on an mpc a hassle at times,..now don't get it twisted I like the 500 and I think it's cool to have a portable mpc but it needs some help in the OS department.

you guys are starting to get me nervous . I only bought the 500 because of financial difficulties i wanted a 2500 or 4000 but no cheddar . I agree with what was said above me that you need to learn it like the back of your hand . Right now im having fun with it because im a big REASON user so to go from software to hardware is a new transition but to see you guys talk about the 500 gets me nervous thats all . I start doubting my decision i should of bought a mightier MPC ....PeacE ...

well let me ask you a question personally, since I'm a Reason user as well...
how do YOU like the 500? do you think it was worth your money? tell me the negative things... cuz im deciding whether or not to get the 500... i think we're in the same shoes... cuz financially, the 500 is very affordable...

Sorry but I don't understand what you're looking for in the 500?
I use it live with an Electribe ESX1 and MPC500+ESX is great!

Usually I capture and edit my samples with a Mac and I'm sure that it is easier and faster than any MPCs. I really don't understand why I should edit the samples on a small screen instead of a monitor and without all the features of an advanced audio software.

I think that MPC500 is a good piece of hardware and its natural collocation is in live session.

its aight, Id say the number one issue for me so far are the sub menus, theres a whole lot of em. If youve never used an mpc then it wont seem as awkward but I can freak a 2kxl with my eyes closed so this thing is takin some gettin used to....

all in all though it seems to be a capable machine, the inconvenience of gettin around in it seriously outweighs the convenience of portability imo...

I'm returning mine. . . My third MPC. I'm a grown ass man, makes no sense out in public like I'm having a seizure with headphones on, bangin on pads. Other things:

Cons:
- Crappy effects - not useful as standalone nor live use
- Pricing not on par with offered technology (effects, processing, RAM, levels,outputs)
- Screen trade-off for portability hurts .. A 1K running JJ OS looks.. better.
- Abscence of official voice in MPC community (i.e. here)

Pros:
- It's an MPC, as vague a that sounds.
- It's kind of fun to mute tracks on it when a sequence runs for live use.

I'm still all about hardware I even sequence the majority of my stuff outside the computer. These people deserve your money better: Elektron, Dave Smith, Ableton, the Sherman Filterbank people and even Moog cause man I've been yearning for that stage edition Little Phatty for a minute.

There are loads more.

Something I learned from ripping my vinyl to my computer to throw onto the CF card/into my Serato library: Making hip hop music or whatever is not a whole lot about sampling. It's about signal processing, with a touch of sequencing. You gonna play sounds back using pads cop a controller with pads.

Ableton partners with Cycling 74. Now circular logic aside, just what di Akai do in the last 10 years to stay ahead of competition? Oh they added a delay effect.

Yo for portability: cop Bhaji Loops and a used PDA. That's like a $40-50 setup

I am an avid 2500/1000 user, And I still use them. The Thing About the 500, is with innovation, comes change...

For the few of us who love the 500, Its just a matter of learning your new tool..I think for the people that start off with a 500, moving up will be easy..
But for those that have become Accustomed to the simple differences, such as pads..screens...and the ease of a chop shop..thats were they run into issues..

All you need is a good lesson in manual sample editing, and some shortcuts...

Some of us should really start making some videos of usage..

anybody wanna buy it for 550 bucks? max ram, 1 gb cf card and vst 6 month extended warranty included. just got it from vst less then 24 hours ago....

i've been a little suspicious of the 500 since it came out...no disrespect. i'm not going to go on and on "my mpc is better blah blah it's a toy omfg don't catch feelings"

i just think the type of people who will use and love this thing is VERY specialized and that a lot of folks who are gonna buy it won't join the fanclub.

i mean it's no surprise - seems to me to be a half-realized product....again. hell, my mpc came out in what, 2003 or 4 and only now is what it should have been to begin with.

to those who love it - props. learn it inside and out and show that skill>machine. turn TC off and record from the main screen with minimal step edit. make clumsy, madlibian beats to which i can bob my head because i love that shit (just cant seem to make it).

to those who don't - ebay it while prices are high and consider either a 1000, sp404 or a laptop for portable needs.

the biggest thing for me w/ portability is being able to sample anywhere. fact is, most places where you have sampleable medium, odds are you are gonna have access to electricity via wall outlets.

ps - why are the pads bad? describe it to me - is it the rubber, the sensitivity...what's going wrong there?

they just dont respond well imo, could be that theyre just not broken in but time will tell...

I stayed up til about 3 am flowers with the 500 and I think Im gonna keep it but thats just cuz I like that I can take it in the bathroom or flowers with it while chillin on the couch without havin to worry about bein near an outlet....

again, flowers sub menus! I wouldve prefered 8 pads and a bigger display....

this is really a "luxury" item imo, not cuz it does anything special(other then operate on batteries) but because it seems like it's only for people who can afford to have an extra mini mpc...
