Does mine have SMPTE and effects installed?

Hey all,

Ive been floating around the forums for awhile, well since i had my first 2000XL in 2004, but it was stolen shortly after i bought it.

well after almost 2 months of the post office trying to find where the put it, it came yesterday.

Now the guy i sold it to told me it had max ram, and the effects board installed.

now i searched, but there where way too many threads to go threw, and the manual is at home, and the comp here at work wont let me download it.

now i look at the back of the unit, and it has 1/4 plugs at the SMPTE plugs.

Does that mean i have that option installed or does it come stock? i dont remember if my old one had those or not.

Also, how do i tell if the effects board is installed?

help me out please.

Well if you go into the effex screen on the mpc and it lets you use them then that means you have the effex installed. Or you could open up the bottom and look.

For the SMPTE you need a chip installed inside. It's a little thing about ¾" square.
Unlike the Classic 2000, the 2000XL came with the smpte sockets already installed but, not necessarily the chip.
To check whether you have the chip installed without opening the machine up, do the following:

Connect the SMPTE out on your MPC to a channel on your mixer or amp

Turn the amp or mixer volume all the way down

Select SMPTE in the midi/sync OUT screen of the mpc

Press rec. and play

Now cautiously turn your mixer volume up and listen for a computery noise.

If it's there, you have the chip installed.

If he can see the 'smpte' name in the midi sync menus, when scrolling through midi clock and midi time code, then it means that he has the option installed. No need to hook up cables.

^ I'm pretty sure that option should be there regardless of the chip being installed. Just like how you can select individual outputs without the 8-out board. If you actually have a use for it, just plug it into another SMPTE device to see if it works.

If you don't have the 8-out board, chances are you don't have it. Studio and Studio plus models both had the 8-out board and SMPTE. Its pretty rare that soemone would install it on their own (although I did) since most people don't even know what it does.

Ocasionally you can still find a SMPTE chip off ebay or a parts place. IMO, its the best way to sync up for recording.

In my 2000xl it did not show up on the screen sync menu untill I installed the chip. I'm pretty sure of it too

My bad, gues I've had the chip too long to remember. I definately remember that sad screen when you went to the FX page with no eb-16. Made me want it that much more.

I'm in similar situation right now, but trying to get 8 outs board. Quite sad when recording. So what that I have good sync, when it takes like 6 or 7 times longer to track everything to the mixing program...well, sooner or later it will be in my unit.
