Hello, Here's some advice many people forget. Back up your files. I am a new user of a MPC2500 (Akai OS1.22). Today I was working and all of a sudden I got a file error while loading and some other error. If something did load it was jumbled garbage. Everything seemed completley screwed.

I had a backup copy of my older files and copied the recent stuff from my CF card to a new file on my computer's hard drive.

I reformatted the card and copied the backed up files to the card and added the new folders I hoped would work, one at a time checking to see if I had problems. Not everything, just the new stuff since backup. Checking in between would let me know which file was corrupt if it was a new one.

After checking the last one, EVERYTHING worked. nothing was lost!

I do consider myself pretty lucky. Back up your stuff a lot, it may save your butt too.

that process is so boring and time consuming but damn its worth it.

it's common knowledge that at least the newer mpc's are delicate about the way you save stuff so you just have to know you're going to have problems sometime. It is boring but isn't it a nice feeling when you know you can recover your beats! I still don't know why it went crazy, so someday, it will happen again....

I've considered that, but it sounds like it's buggy too. It seems like in the JJ forum many complain about it's bugs too. I still may try it.

I think you can, but can you reload the Akai OS if you don't like the JJ?

Im not to computer savvy. How do you actually go about backing up your beats? What do you just stick the cf card in the computer and save it their? Someone explain this to me. Because all I usually do is track out each individual sound in the daw mix it down and save there. since I have all the tracks there and the mpc then thats good enough for me

It isn't terminally buggy the way the Akai OS is, and one big difference is that when bugs are reported they actually get fixed, something that just about never happens with Akai software. Also, if you read into those bug posts on the JJ forum you will realize that a large percentage of them are user error simply because people aren't familiar with the software and the documentation is still being written.

You can upgrade or downgrade to whatever OS you like whenever you want.

I'll have to try the JJOS. It's cheap.

To back up, I just create a folder and put the CF card in a card reader. Then drag the files from the CF to the new folder. (mac osx, I assume you could do the same on a pc).

Also, I think you could do it with out a cf reader if the mpc is plugged in through usb. same process as above.

The backing up is quick and easy. the sorting through to find the corrupt file, or ones that aren't is the boring tedious part.

I do try to record the beats to audio too. That way, worst case, you can sample them back in as loops.

like electric muz said: the bugs aren't too serious, and they get fixed pretty quick. you also get an 'i'm involved with the design of an mpc's operating system' grin on your face.

Pretty much yes. I copy the contents of my cf card to a folder called backup_ddmmyyyy to be completely sure I will burn a batch of these folders to a cdrom or dvd if my harddisk were ever to crash.

So, does it also fix the file system errors? Somehow I cannot believe that JJs OS does a better implementation of the file system than Akai does.

Umm...I think I would rather get an "I'm supporting companies getting payed for developing a proper OS" frown on my face

Why? Is there something about Akai's history of software development that suggests they would do better? I've only seen the opposite.

Yes, JJ modified the disk formatting routine with V3.05 and fixed those obnoxious problems ages ago. Old news here.

Well, If you want decent software, it might help to support the parties who have actually proven they can produce it, and if you want to keep the frown, keep waiting for Akai. :P

BTW -- Only a small group of individuals know the "complete truth" about JJ at this time, but it is entirely possible that the JJ OS is just an Akai outsourcing contract operation anyway.

Yes, that's exactly the point. I positively do not want to support this kind of business, giving part of the development to another party and let customers pay this party extra for something that should have been there in the first place - a correctly working Operating System for the hardware.

Assuming of course that Akai is really behind this.
