MPC1000 power cable nightmare!

I left my mpc1000 power cable at a gig and havnt been able to retrieve it so I naturally bought a new cable using the spec on the back of the unit. When I plugged it in and turned it on, it buzzed so i pulled it out and smelt electrical burning coming from the back of the unit.
This is highly distressing!!
I took the power cable back to the shop with the MPC and theyve sent it to be checked by the electrical engineers. But I might get charged even though it appears to be their fault for selling me the wrong cable
In the meantime, any ideas whythis mightve happen, so I have some ammunition should they try to charge me loads of money for repairs.

it's just a standard IEC power cord.

I realise that but when i plugged it in the machine buzzed and burnt something inside.

All should be revealed by Tuesday.. Fingers and toes crossed

U shoulda just used a cable from a computer or somputer monitor, or laser printer. . .

The shop I got it from is Maplin - if your from the UK you'll know it - I suspect they sold me the wrong type of lead, even though the voltage and amp spec seemed to match. They arent taking responsibility for the MPC exploding and I suspect I'm going to have to do some serious complaining to get it fixed, but we shall see. In the meantime, please boycott those bastards. Buy your DJ and Studio leads from somewhere else if possible. Maplin Suck D**k !! To be continued...

you can't break the mpc by using a standard IEC cable, it's just wires. unless there was some kind of voltage change going on along the wire (ie a transformer, which you would notice because it's huge and heavy) there should be no problem. the only things i can think of are that the cable wasn't up to the job, and melted, or else it was wired up incorrectly. did it have a moulded in plug at both ends, or did you have to wire the plug yourself? you should have perhaps tested it before giving it back to them as it's your only evidence that they've caused this. you could try another cable (you have one on your computer, or at least: you should do) just to check, if the mpc's fuct, it won't matter, but if it was just the cable that melted, it'll show it wasn't up to the job.

I wouldn't boycott Maplin just yet....
Its a standard IEC mains lead. The problem was probably with the cable not being fully pushed into the socket. The can cause a buzzing sound. This is due to the contact not quite meeting, but close enough so that the voltage can overcome the air gap and spark.

This could cause a funny smell as the hot gas (heated air) from the arcing would start to melt the plastic around the plug and go a bit smelly.

There may have been a foreign object in the plug end or recepticle, which may have caused the smell.

It may have stressed your MPC power supply when plugging it in. Its always a good idea to plug everything in, then turn on the mains then MPC. Its unlikely this was the cause of the smell, but its the nature of electronics to fail when being turned on (think of lightbulbs for example), so could be the MPC power supply decided to die.

IIRC the MPC has a switchmode power supply, which can autorange to the line voltage, so should be quite tolerant unless you really go for it.

The only thing I can suggest is that you plugged it into a 415volt 3phase socket? These are very rare in domestic settings. Usually they have a different plug, but on occasion I've seen "normal" looking plugs which give 415 volts. Usually these are used in theatres, etc

I'd imagine the most likely cause is that the cable had a fault and started to smell and buzz. This does happen sometimes. Its not a Maplin specific thing. Its either due to cheapo cables, which are batch tested or poor protection and handling during shipping/storage.

I hope its not your MPC, but bear in mind a product in the MPC price range will have a certain failure rate associated with it, so you may be in the unlucky % of people where something "goes bang".

It was a slightly dodgy connection and the buzzing occured when the power lead was slightly loose. When the power lead is connected securely the display light comes on but the screen is blank. I have tried turning it on and off about ten times. I also tried the contrast change (shift and data wheel) and it came up with a meesage about a Boot Error of some description, suggesting that the OS needs reinstalling. I turned the system off and now when I try the contrast change I still get nothing, not even an angry meesage.

I'll try to reinstall OS when I get home. I dont have the OS on my flash card so I'll have to try and transfer it via USB -- fingers crossed!

I shall keep ya'll informed. And if your reading this and you have any ideas, please share

have you got the jjos? if so, to adjust contrast you have to hold stop and move the data wheel, as opposed to shift with the akai os.
