No ur not, because number 1.... hiphop is built on that, but its about shaping those sounds to ur own (and its about havin diggin skills to find the drums and sh!t in first place that u flip)... this thred started because some one doesnt have the skills to shape shit to they own..

So instead peeps tellin him to jack that beat makers drums, instead of actually learnin to shape the sounds himself and make something new with them.

1 Thing is.. not all drums can be straight used (alot will sound weak wether u think so or not, compare them next to kev's sh!t and u got ur reason why dude started this thred, because he samples all day long and CANT GET THAT SOUND!!!!!

, yeah peeps sample and will use them without addin sh!t (processin etc), but they just sound weak, again the diff between a toy and a fully capible beat maker and the reason why the big mans sound so much better...

Now, what u guys gonna go when in the future u find the dopest drums while diggin, but u cant turn them into hiphop drums because instead of takin the time to learn how to do ur sh!t (laying, filtering, eq, compression etc) instead u just jacked other peeps hiphop drums coz u didnt take take to learn?? Basictly u just aint gonna be able to use / shape them how u want through not learnin.

Ur only holdin urselfs back with th!s bullsh!t method and un willingness to actually learn.

See when peeps give u props on ur beats, when they give props on the "sound" thats false props... coz it aint ur skills gettin that sound.. its the beat maker and the engineer who worked on the hiphop track u have sampled from!

When peeps give me props on the "sound" of my beats.. its MY WORK.. its my diggin, choppin, filtering, layering and pitching (and mixin the layers), eq'n, compression.... etc etc

Not some one elses work / time they spent on theyre hiphop drums.


And thought i better add, Anyone can learn to sequence.. but learning to get ur sh!t soundin dope soundwise... learnin to process sh!t not just to get it dope but to get ur "own sound" is alot more to learn then the actual sequencin.. its one of the biggest things which seperates skill level.

Its so obvious how its fakin it when samplin other hiphop drums, how people dont understand this is beyond me!

plex it doesnt matter where you sample from as long as you add your own flavor to the sample..

i understand what hip hop was built on, but we're over 20 years deep into hip hop and shht has changed.. drums are drums, no matter where you get em from. just enjoy all the available options out there.

unless you record your 'own' instruments, sampling from old soul records is the same as sampling from a hip hop record.

there are some samples (drums) that you just cant take. for example, nottz uses a signature snare and a signature bass. anyone who samples them are most definately stealing his style because he custom made those drums..

but for an average 'basic' drum sample with no signature on it, there are no rules..

And as for "toy" Im workin with some of uk's biggest, and have peeps come to me for beats like members of ny groups such as The Arsonists..

Ur the ones who are jackin other hiphop producers work.. In stead of learnin to do sh!t properly, why dont u learn the sh!t if u want good drums instead of jackin other peeps sh!t they put work and theyre skills into.

Nobody says you're wrong for your ethics on sampling(for self). Thats great for you. I get the hard work you say you put into your beats. I'm sure you come up with some great things & enjoy the digging aspect of your music & creating it, the way you do.

To put a limit on a sampler is a self restriction. One you choose to make. Thats great, but that instrument was invented to sample. What others choose to do with it, is just as valid as what you do. Thats why I called you a TOY!

The TB-303 was created for Bass accompaniment. It was mostly ignored for that. However, some dudes in Detroit took it and created the most sought after Acid machine ever created. In fact, there are numerous clones created for that. Think about it,...who would've imagined?

When Roger Linn created the MPC, he had no idea it would become one of the greatest HipHop machines ever. Still, he embraces it. It became bigger than he ever wished.

I hate, hate, hate ROM based synths. I think they sometimes make people lazy. However, will I still listen & respect all of those people that choose to use those type of synths? Yes.

Pete Rock said he stumbled onto the filter by messing around on an S950. He stumbled onto what it did, by chance. A whole league of producers learned and followed suit. Does that make them wack? Nah, cause good music still comes from all of those people that learned about the filter in the S950.

Your Elitist view is just like saying that anything not created by your standards is garbage. Is that really true?

If you released something I liked, I would buy it. I would even be inspired to take your approach & only use relics that I dug out of some thrift store. But, to limit myself and never listen to anything else is wrong.

Thats not the case, hiphop has been based on samplin from the start, but its about shaping those sounds urself.

As i said nottz got a signature snare etc, most beat makers who know theyre sh!t have theyre own style of layering, eq, filter, compression etc going to make theyre "signature sound"... hense why this guy asked bout kev brown's drums and to get that sound.

Its what seperates beat makers, how they can sample diff drums and layer, shape them into theyre own sound and style... ur not just jackin a drum like if it was from the same source, u are jacking that beat makers processing skills.

The guy who started this thred, asked how to get that style coz his sampled drums sound wack, if he dont learn to chop, layer, filter and eq drums for himself.. if he samples from hiphop tracks instead of learnin to do the sh!t himself how he ever gonna work a dope drum break if he finds one in future?

Its just not right, ur takin some one elses signature sound and work / skills on the boards, not just the drum sample.

I been workin on track today doin final touches, addin bits where needed and generally buildin it up.. then mixdown etc etc, and i spent HOURS on the sound of the drums... pitchin the layers of each drum so they work together filtering, layering, eq'n them and gettin them sittin nice together, compression, mixin the layers gettin them soundin cohiesive like 1 fat drum, then overall compression and eq to shape that sound into my final drum sound for track, goin through the stage with every drum, workin out variations of each usin slight diff drum sounds sampled from each same break so i got diff drums variations of the hiphop drums i created to use at diff points to make it sound live and keep it flowin good..

It would be wack for some one to straight up jack that, coz they aint puttin in the work.. they jackin some one elses hard work to get fat drums and takin the credit in theyre beats.

Im probably going to get slammed for this but I agree with Complex. If you are taking another producer's snares...you are taking his sound and that is wack. The only rule in hip hip is "NO BITING!"

Why can't you find your own snares? Go dig that shit up!
