The term "synth" is way too broad, you have to know specifically what kind you need. A lot of people go to rompler style ones first like emu boards, which is good if you want preset sounds. If you want to synthesize your own sounds, then you want one of the virtual analog ones like the kork MS2k. This is a good synth but bery limited polyphony at 4. I'd recomend the Roland JP 8080 over that as I've seen them go for 400 on ebay these days and have 10 voices. Knobs don't feel as cheap and is very versatile.
