Chopping by ear

I have to say, I bought a 500 for the simple reason that it was my first MPC, I wanted hardware and something I could actually use percussively and it was absolutely at the limit of my budget. Upon discovering chopshop features, patched phrase samples in the larger MPCs, and the reality of no waveform edit on the 500 dawning upon me, I felt pretty sure that I was going to have a much harder time screwing with samples in the 500. How wrong I was! Turns out that chopping by ear is the only way to go - chopshop, or any kind of automation never ever works as well as your head, and ends up taking longer. And hey, cats on the SPs never complained eh!? I now have no real reasons to upgrade, other than perhaps track level feature or more outs.

I actually haven't even tried chopping by ear. How do one go about doing it? Going in to trim mode and changing the sample start/end and then extracting it? Or is there an even easier way?

Like all mordern MPCs, when you edit a sample pad 11 (play to) will play whatever data is before your start point. So as you adjust the start point and hit the 'play to' pad, as soon as you hear a click you'll know that's the start point. Then pad 12 is 'play from', so play that and edit the end point until you hear a click. There's your end point for that sample. Then just extract your selection as a new sample.

how do u chop on this?cuz i just bought 1

I chop chop in Acid Pro and export the samples to my mpc. Or chop on the MPC 1000 and save them to memory card.
