Master Gain

Hello, i have an MPC60 I and iam looking for plug correctly the Stereo OUT.
I only can have a "good" sounding with the "Low" GAIN int the front of the Drum machine.I was trying the "Mid" & "Hi" GAIN, But the speeakers got some "cracking noize"...

Then, when i Rec the MPC signal in my laptot, i find the wave is as lower as i would it should be.

Do You amplify the MPC befor going into the laptot...or how can i plug my MPC for have a correct sounding?

What are you sampling from? I use vinyl into an amplifier then sample with MID gain.

I sample from my laptop, some wav bank...
Do you think the "MID" Gain need some Amplification to have a correct signal?

Low gain is already enuff

i sample vinyl through a vestax PMC 06 pro A dj mixer at mid gain on the 60. i set the stereo mix volume at about the 2/3 mark. when i go to sounds 5 to sample a new sound, i turn the master gain volume on the dj mixer up until the meter on the 60 reaches as far to the right as possible without getting the "!" sign.

or, if the sample is overpowering the drum sounds, i have to lower the volume on the mixer so the meter on the 60 reaches about halfway or 2/3 and re-sample until the levels are closer.

if you are multitracking, you don't really have to worry about the original levels, as you can tweak those on the mixing board, and then record to your PC or other hardware.

since i'm only recording stereo out directly to my m-audio 2496 sound card with ACID 4.0, i can adjust the levels there if i need to. sometimes i record all the tracks in one shot by playing the sequence, other times i record each track separately and tweak those 6 or 8 tracks within ACID cuz the m-audio 2496 has only one set of INs.

before, when i recorded via the stock PC sound card, it sounded like crap! it was WAY too quiet. with the 2496, i've noticed a HUGE difference in sound levels.

so, you should definitely get a sound card for your laptop.

I got already a DMX 6 Fire but in a couple of week, i gonna get a Tascam Fw1884 with 16 track...i hope i can find a better way to mix with the separated track...

But until this moment i'm still search some good configuration.
For exemple when i sample a vynil throught my UMX-5 (dj mixer), the 60 is in Low Gain and the Stereo Mix Volume is Max...And when i go into the MPC Mixer (menu Drum Mix and then First option...) All the "MPC Fader" are Max too!
Must it be not in max, or maybe can i change the initialised position of the fader,isn't it?

the 60 has very low output. it's normal. run it into a mixer or a preamp. forat also offers output boost.

I just got my MPC 60 II today (thanks jonathanpduffy ) and love it but got the same problem and asked myself if it´s normal?
When I Monitor my MPC through the Headphones Output (the 60 II got one), it´s perfect but the Stereo outs running through my Mixer it´s very and I mean very low almost dull. I have to turn the gain on my Mixer to the fullest and then I get hum cause it´s way too much gain.

But I feel in love with that machine anyway, it fits my workflow perfect and I worked with it just a couple of hours.

But how do you solve that problem?

When I first got the 60, I thought I was doing something wrong or something was broken, because all my sampling was at a really low volume and sounded SUPER distorted.

Then as I got more experience and learned the machine more, I feel like I know what I'm doing now. The 60 does have a naturally low output but I hardly need to turn the gain up on my mixer because I know how to get really loud and good samples into my 60 with my setup. Learn and get experience and you should be cool.

And you can always get the output boost at Forat. I've been meaning to do that, but don't have the money.

Yeah but I would like to hear my beats running through my mixer and monitors too.
But the headphone output has proven his use already

I´m gonna try the Indiv Out method but it seems like a pain in the ass to route the outs every time. Or is there a global setting to achieve this for every pad and save it in the params file?

This has been bugging me... I just didn't have a problem with the gain, and I'm trying to work out why.

I did use a ground loop box (I still do)...and that eliminated all hum, so my outputs were turned up to max, ...but that was always enough.

have you tried fiddling with the little switch at the back which alters gain?

I usually went from MPC - ground loop box (small black thing,...cheap) - compressor or direct into my soundcard (a presonus firebox...which does have nice clean pre-amps). Once I use the ground loop box (and kept all my stuff off one power outlet) I could wack the thing up to full level no problem, no hum...and there was no difference between the headphone out and the stereo out.

On another tip...Man, you gotta use those individual outs! ... especially as you've got that nice desk... It takes away one of the few disadvantages of the 60, no filters,...cos you can eq everything on your desk. Individual drums, your loop running in stereo... freakin' wonderful!

Or you can use the 60 for sequencing and the S950 for the loop/drum work (though I always used a combination).
