Hi,
I just won an auction earlier today on a nice looking MPC 2000 XL. Considering I am new to the MPC world I am not an expert on information regarding this hardware.

I found something really strange just a minute ago and thought I would come here for more information. In the auction listing it states that he had upgraded the machine to 64 megs! :? He later edited his listing and said that he was asked to sell the 64 meg upgrade and so now the MPC only comes with 32 megs!!!!!! I know I know....I just realized that you can never upgrade the MPC beyond 32 megs but I assumed because he was selling the thing that he knew more then me and I thought well at least it still has the 32 meg upgrade. He says clearly in his listing that now because he sold the 64 meg upgrade that the MPC now has only 32 megs. I want to send him a message about this but I want to know my info first.

Does the memory expansion on an MPC 2000 XL being at 32 megs mean that it would have two chips of 16 mb each on there or one chip or...? I am unsure.

Any info appreciated, I need to know soon so I can send the guy a message asking if the thing really has the 32 megs (being two sticks or whatever it would be) or if he actually thought the 32 megs was 64 megs and thus this MPC would actually come with nothing but the 2 megs on board. So yeah, I need to know what would be in the machine if it had 32 megs upgrade.

Thanks all.

Follow up:

I found out my answer. In case anybody ever does a search on the memory options for the MPC 2000 XL and locates this thread I will provide the answers that I found.

When the MPC 2000xl or 2000 is expanded to 32 megs you would have two 16mb chips inside the machine.

I found some of my info at:
http://www.edgetechcorp.com/memory/upgrade.asp?cid=25214

The Akai MPC MPC2000 XL uses 60ns type memory and has 2 bank(s) of 1 socket(s) each for a total of 2 memory socket(s) . The Akai MPC MPC2000 XL comes standard with 2MB of RAM and supports up to 32MB of RAM with 2MB of that in Fixed RAM.

Page 192 of the 2kXL manual asys you can have 1 32M SIMM or 2 16M SIMMS for the 32 megs, but 32 is the max. I've seen a few people on eBay selling 2kXLs with 64MB of memory. I saw this particular seller's ad. Sounded like garbage the minute I heard it.

You should have asked the question before you won the auction. Hope you didn't get got homie.

Peace,
KM

Be careful of getting your "information" from a store homeboy. That link shows what they have in their inventory, but doesn't correspond to what the 2kXL manual says. I'd trust the manual first. The 2M internal RAM gets ignored if you install the 32M of RAM.

Thanks man. Yeah good looks...trusting somebody trying to sell you something isn't half as trustworthy as the manual. Thanks for the info. About asking the question first well I honestly didn't even think anything was weird till several hours later I was reading something and it said that MPC 2000 XL's are maxed out at 32 megs...at which point I was like .
I suppose on a purchase this large I should do my research more thoroughly but I was caught up tangling with that voice in my head saying "NEED MPC NOW". You should seriously be my life coach man. hahahaha

Well I messaged him and he said that the machine definitely has 32 megs and the extra 32 meg card he had was not installed yet and he didn't realize that you could only expand to 32 mb. He said the machine is in like new condition, the pads work great and there are no scratches, etc. He has over 100 transactions and 100% feedback so I feel good about that but I guess we'll see what the deal is.

32 megs max, no more.
