so for example, last night i tried to play a melody on the mpc via a midi keyboard. after i assigned the pads (bank a) to the correct ascending keys, i pushed 16 levels (which from what i get assigns the selected sample chromatically across the pads) the original source sample played. So im guessing the midi note is attached to the actual sample and not the pad? am i correct.

thanks.

16 levels doesn't spread samples chromatically.

for this you either have to create a program with pitch variations on each
pad, or you can use the autochromatic function JJ has included (which does
the same thing i think).

i haven't used it, so i can't give you details on how to do it exactly. but it's
been discussed heaps so just do a little search and no doubt you'll find the
answer.

good luck :)
