Sup fam?

Hey everyone, wow... information and opinion overloads on this site

I must say, I'm overwhelmed, I'm sure tons of people looking to get started, are... specially if they actually research and whatnot, I've read extremely positives and negatives about the two MPCs I'm considering.

So more or less, I'm considering the 500 and the 1000, and I know what ya'll say 99.9% of the time, go with the 1000. But that extra money right now, just seems so ehhh... and I wont lie, I'm 100% impulse buyer, with no patience, once I'm all bout something, its hard not to go for it asap.

So obviously the 500, would be easier to buy then the 1000, in short time.

As for gear and experience......
I got a good condenser mic, I have a computer strictly for recording vocals (which I'd use if needed with the mpc - but rather not have too) , I use Adobe Audition for tracks, I have a M-Audio Oxygen 8 v2 MIDI Controller, a Line 6 Tone Port, Phantom Power box for the mic, I have a Behringer mixing board (not usb) , Alesis Sr-16 which I've used in the past, and access to most needed software if I came across a situation, oh and I got an old record player, cuz I love the old vinyl, but never hooked it up to any kind of mixing equipment.

As far as playing around with software, I've messed with Fruity Loops and Reason, never cared for trying to make drums with a mouse, I personally cant get into a grove that way.....

So I'm looking now into the MPC, not to make money selling beats, thats aint on my agenda in the least bit, it'd be mainly for the enjoyment of making something ill (obviously in the long run) and having fun makin music, and no lies, the beats will be used by me and my boy....

I've looked at the compair sheet between the two, and I've read tons of pros/cons love/hate messages, but I've only seen video/heard tracks strictly from the 1000.... is it acheivable by the 500? Grimmey hip hop tracks, no mtv style crap, no south beats, I mean raw underground stuff

And.....

How can/or would I want too.... interwieve the other gear I have into the mix with a MPC500/1000 ? (aside from the turntable, I know thats a staple in a setup)

well, maybe my perspective will help.

i owned a 2000 nonXL from 1999-2005. sold it, bought a rhodes.

i bought an mpc 500 open box special at Guitar Center in March but had to return it a few days later because after an hour or so of use the outputs would start distorting.

so i decided this week to pick up another 500.
went to GC hoping to score a 500 for $599 and they had a used 1000 for $599. bought that instead.

love it. it is soooo much deeper than the 500 and i'm not even using JJ OS yet.

i didnt realize that the going rate for a used 1000 was less than the 500 is new. i've looked around and it is. good to know.

if you have never owned an mpc, a 500 would be fine for learning on. keep the box, manual and everything, keep it in super-clean shape and you can probably sell it a few months down the road with all that stuff in great condition for almost enough to get into a used 1000 if you end up outgrowing the 500.

dont get me wrong the 500 can do a lot. i'd take one over a 2000 nonXL anyday.

i have a boy that makes very great music using nothing but an sp303 dr sampler and records. he has a 7" available at turntablelab even. good good shit.

make your decision and learn whichever one you choose inside-out.

the cheapest I've found a used 1000 at a local music store was

549 with no ext card ??

and 699 with no description to any upgrades n such, so who knows


ebay, well mpc's on ebay just cost almost nothing less then new

honestly a new 500 is slightly out of my range currently, but its closer then a new 1000

which is my issue currently seems everyone wants almost face value for a mpc even if its beat up.

i'm itchin to get started on something, thats all I know right now.... lol

I can get a mpc1000 for $500, but its got a jacked pad on it, is it worth it, how much is that to fix, where can it be fixed at if I can't do it?

you can always go back in fix that dosent mean you cant make a beat on it i mean you got 15 more pads go for it

Its hard selling a 500 now, and thats what you would probably end up doing.
Go buy a used 1000, it will work great even without any upgrades.
Also consider buying a 2000xl and a cardreader from mpcstuff.com. That might work well for you too.

Ya I noticed not to many 500s are getting alot of action on ebay. You gotta look at it from my angel, the lower the price the more in my range it is, I'm broke right now haha.. I can come up with 5 bills no prob, but buying a broken piece of equipment for ur firrst mpc, kinda sucks.... I know ya gotta understand that lol

but I have another question with kinda that in play, if ur pads are broken and you have a MPD 16, do you have full functionality as the mpc would new, I saw someone using it from this forum on a video o_O

I guess my decision isnt needed right now, I was debating but thats over, the girl surprized me and won a 500 on ebay for a cheap like 4 bills, so I guess it'll be my first mpc....

time to dust off the vinyl and record player since the move haha

U dont use the mouse, u use the midi controller, which is basictly the same as usin pads on mpc.

Why do u own a midi controller if u dont know what to use it for and how? and why take such a big and costly step to do what u could already do if u took the time to understand how the equipment u already own works?

My boy gave it to me when he moved two months ago for free, I played with those programs sometime last year without one.

I haven't had the time up until now to start messing with shit, due to me moving in with my girl, work and working on some collabs and promoting shit, now I do and I wanna try the mpc shit out....

Mad haters on this board, haha I aint tryin to make cream on beats nor am I trying to be some big time producer like most of they star eyed peeps on here, just trying to bang out some beats for my own music.

I've used drum machines for diff kinds of music in the past (metal and rock), and even with a keyboard I wouldn't feel comfortable doing drums with it.

yeah thats fair enough, alot of peeps prefer pads to keys, its just the way u said bout clickin them in with mouse before mentionin ur views with keys and drums

ur best bet would still be to go with an mpc tho or maybe a rack sampler hooked to ur pc via midi, and u could still use ur midi keyboard along with an mpd 24 controller or some shit so u could rock like mpc still but also use ur midi keys for bass vst's and shit, check the controller anyway if u havent seen it already...

Im usin an akai s2000 rack sampler with midi keys but i wanna get that mpd ^ to use with it also.

U would get an akai rack sampler for a hell of alot cheaper then mpc (just hook it up to ur pc via midi and audio), u might pick one up for around $100 even, u would have all the sampling and chopping features of an mpc, and then the sequencin capabilitys of a pc.

Plus the filters and sh!t on the sampler, and could install an fx card if u wanna use the akai effects instead of the sequencers of vst ones u might have (or use both).. the akai filters are real good to use but then thats built into the samplers anyway..

Alot of rack samplers usually come with 8 output boards nowadays when buyin off peeps, as most of them have previously been used and expanded.. so u could hook those up to ur mixer or pc interface and track each thing seperatly.. or u could hook it up via sp dif if u have the option.

Either way would be hell of alot cheaper and would be a very powerful set up.

Still gotta dig hard man, build up a library and style, ur diggin skills and what u learn to dig for effects and moulds ur style just as much (and more) as the techniques u use to make ur beats

oh i get that, but its better then asking some producer for free beats, or having to pay 300+ a beat, for lease that other peeps can use too, know what i mean ?
