Peep this.......

I made beats on the sp 505 for a while, but Toecutter is right, it teaches a lot about loops, and quantizing, after about a year of having it i out grew it, i wanted something similar but a little more versatile, the mpc 1k was perfect. I would say the roland 202, 303, 505 and 606, are all good things to learn on, but once an authentic style is developed, any of the mpc series are perfect for hip hop.

I got a SP-808ex I picked up a while back and while it works OK as a digital 4-track and has some nice effects, its essentially a piece of sh!t compaired to the MPC1k. Far from an instrument and not at all a self sufficient. Sounds like the 606 is somewhat different and has increased midi functioning over the 808 but I don't really see how it would add too much to a mpc1k usnless you like cakewalk( ).

really i think the only valuable parts of the 606 seemed to be the effects and how you could control them. me and my friend loved fcking with his effects on his 808 with that invisible sensor thing. those are really intuitive. imagine if they were to come out with a mpc1000XL! and they added more effects and that sht!!

got a sp505 also, it is nice for a beginner...
the sp606 is almost the same thing (some more fx,...) but it only has 1 stereo output! This sucks...

It's nice that you get a program to write your songs on pc and transfer to the sp606... but I presume it's also possible with the MPC1k . (haven't got the time to experiment with ) What would be a good program for the mpc1k by the way ? (similar SP 606 and his software program)

for real though, I've toyed with the 505 and various other Roland drum machines and thier pads suck, they're somewhat rounded over the top and you don't really get a good feel... its like you have to hit it right in the center to make it sound... crappy... that lil air effect thing was cool though.
