exactly! i my page gets enough traffic with out a thread. i see how some people just hate, cuz all i was trying to do is give people thats new to doing beats a tip and all i get is criticized for it.

All I was sayin is that thats how it seems when ur putting a myspace link at the bottom of ur post each time.. and I wasnt talkin bout BG i was talkin bout the thread starter.. I just find it weird how its not in your signature, but instead you post it at the end of each post.

Anyways, I was jus bitchin tho.. coz I was at work, tired after bein up at 6am. My bad. To get on track with the discussion, I think what Lampdog said is the best way to look at it. I mean, if you can do all the drums with no quantising and make it sound dope, by all means you should go for it. I mean listen to Jel how he gets down.. sh!t he will play the whole damn beat live, sample and everything.. but some folks can't be on time like that. I try, but I mean I still gota quantise here n there.

hit f1 in the main window. Wiki drum swing and theory.


I use 1/8 for the snare (usually hits every 2nd note) and 1/16 for the basic kick (that way you can get that "low drum before the main kick"). But my secret is to use the velocity WOOOO!

after saying this: what's up with that post that dj premier's hihats are set to 50% and kick &snare's to 60%?

Premier, I'm sure is familiar with, and puts to use, many different swing settings and quantise settings. Both statements could indeed be true but they don't apply to all of his tracks.

Try different things - especially beats and timing chops that you are uncomfortable with - you learn the most doing things you're not used to....If quantize is the only way you record tracks, try without - and vice versa. You can always quantize segments or the whole track after you record it without. I tend to quantize most drum samples and just play in some real percussion to give the "human" feel to a track. With instrument voices, I play 'em in without quantize and just go back and "fix" certian phrases or individual notes. Sometimes however, if the phrase is more complicated than I can realistically play well, I'll just quantize the whole thing.....same thing if I'm working by the clock - straight quantize. Why waste a cat's $$ by spending hours hitting a track that's on the beat when Roger Linn made it possible to hit a button and be dead on......

and i am just saying that no machine knows what i am going for better than me. Granted I studied the drumset since age 12. Also note placement isn't t the only element of swing. Most people go wrong in thinking that. I always create tracks that swing where when u look at the grid everything is dead on.

swing = note placement, dynamics, and note interaction
