I'm starting to regret getting the 1000 myself. I haven't used, owned or had any other gear besides it, but I already feel like I've outgrown it, and I want to move up to a 2000xl or a 4000.

Could it be that this is just my first "girl" and I can't help but wonder what else is out there and have a wandering eye? Is this just the start of gear lust?

If I give up the 1000 there are afew things that I'll be missing: size, CF format, ease of PC connectivity.

But I really like the idea of the 2000xl having autochrome, bpm match, timestretch, pitchshift, ability to add fx card, SMPTE, ability to play two sequences at once.

Then there's the 4000. That's a whole different ball of wax.

Basically I'm having a hard time here and I don't feel I made the right decision for me, the only thing is I don't know what the right decision is!

I especially would like to have the honest opinions of those that have experience with the other MPC's as well as the 1000.

Any feedback or thoughts that you may have would be great! I'm a miserable wreck over this and I need some insight!

P.S. I'm looking for a stand alone unit. I'm not really sure about adding another piece of gear especially a rack sampler at this time. If I get another piece of gear it will most likely be the 2000xl and I would be selling the 1000 to cover most of those costs.

No regrets here, dude.

My old 2k took up far too much space, and nearly all of the functions I lost in moving over to the 1k are faster and more convenient to perform on the computer anyway! The 1k has built-in effects, a free 32 MB CF card that came with it (plenty for loading kits as long as you backup and change out using the computer and maybe Goins' FREE MPC1k Editor [the non-1k version is NOT free, but both are kickass produts]) which allows me to build layers of sound and everything on the computer.

The 1k is perfect for those, like me, with little space for hardware but who still love the pads and the MPC sequencer. I've got very few beefs with it (still just that Velo% missing and no program select for MIDI devices) and it has crashed very little on me. I use it to sequence other hardware, software synths, and internal drums and synth tones, and it is a wonderful machine. Finally I can fit my Karma and my MPC both on my computer desk!!

Image

The 2k by contrast, is bulky, crashes more frequently in my experience (I have never had an XL to compare that) and is no longer under development by Akai. OS updates pop up every couple months for the MPC1k! The only things lost in the tradeoff to 1k are my little complaints, a tiny bit more wave editing functionality, and SCSI connections. Which are supplanted by CF and computer storage anyway.

The only case in which I would recommend a 2k or XL is when you're trying to completely remove the computer from your setup, if you have some sort of stigma attached to the computer. Otherwise, I say the 1k is the way to go! (the 4k is so far beyond my spending limits I've never bothered to try it out)

I used to have a 2000xl and sold it - the 1000 in my opion is way tyter - no more floppys or zips, gone from crashes to none and the space saver is way nice - PEACE 1000

Thank you Thynctank for your feedback! At this point i'm looking just to have one piece of gear that will do almost everyhting for me. The 4000 seems like a dream machine, but after reading some reviews and the various problems and bugs it seems more like a nightmare. As far as the computer it's not so much stigma as I just don't like working on it. Not only that it has too many distractions that keep me from making tracks. That's why I want a stand alone unit to work with. I might just get a used 4000 but I'm worried. It's a lot of money even used and it's just the stories about it are just....well....you know...there's more bad stories about it than good!

I don't know! I'm confused as ****. All I know is that I'm not particularly happy with what I got goin' on right now and that's just the 1000 and a PC running cool edit pro 2.

Any more suggestions or thoughts?!

I can get a 4000 for about that price! The thing that makes shit tricky is that we don't have GC's where I'm at. I can't go down to a local store and **** with any of these before I get them. I have to buy them to try them out to see if I like them. With as limited as a budget as mine this really sucks, and is one of the reasons why I'm having such difficulties. In the music world there are way to many different products, options, etc, that make this shit so confusing and difficult for me. ANd the MV just doesn't have enough info on it. It seems limited in a lot of ways too.

This is one of the main reasons I'm hesitant to go the 2xl route, plus it's sampler an feat. are limited so I'd still likely have to use a PC. And from what I've heard about SCSI and zips it could be a real pain.

Well if u think the Mv8k is limited then cop the 4k! U must be gettin a used 4k or the 4k LE[which I dont have time to search for cd-r and all the other sh!t that's missin! I dont buy used studio equipment all my sh!t is brand new and the 4k that I wanted is the 4k plus brand new is $2800 for what problemz so that's why Im not goin to cop it! O ya by the way akai just put up another os for the 1k v1.04!

you need to make time and play with the 1000...the dif between the 4k and 1k is not that great. it seems like your not even sure what you need or want....

but as a personal opinion on the mv...."it's a waste of time and a sorry excuse for a MPC"

same your money and learn your equipment

peace

I've learned my equipment. I know what I would want in equipment, but I don't know what equipment really comes close to that. I have spent a lot of time with the 1000. How do you possibly think I know it's limitations? The 1000 is not an a complicated piece of gear, and it doesn't have a lot of functions that I need, especially since I'm trying to get away from the PC. Also as I stated above I have no way of trying before buying so I'm looking for input. Sorry the 1000 is not what I'm looking for. If it's great for you... fine! It's certainly not for everybody.

I don't consider it a PC because it has one function...sampler...no internet, no games, no plug ins, just pure beatmaking power...stop hating bro it doesn't look good on you!
