MPC 2000 beginner questions

Hi this is my first post here and i just got a 2k classic about 2 weeks ago. I have figured out most of it but i have a couple of questions:

1. When i get all of my sequences done I dont know how to lay them out properly. I get them in song mode and set them up how I want.
For example : Intro 2 bars
drums 2 bars rep. 8 times
sample 2 bars rep. 8 times

I have it like that ^^^^^ but it doesnt play the drums with the sample, it just plays the 2bar drum 8 times then the 2bar sample 8 times after it.
could someone help me out ?

2. And i am just running floppy disks and i am wondering how i would save my whole song together on one disk.

Read up in the manual about:
-creating a song (pay attention to Repeats setting)
-saving options/disk operations

I'm sure manual covers these problems.

Say playa, you probably won't be able to save everything on the floppy. if you have the 32mb option you wont be able to, but if you just have the 2mb (standard) you should be able tosave everything that you do for one song.

i save all my songs onto one floppy disk.

Thats weird. Are you sure you've got your beats in each sequence playing right? And are the drums playing all the way thru each sequence? It's probably something simple you;re not doing - easy mistakes to make when you're getting started! Just check everything thru a few times.

Also, try to get your hands on an Iomega Zip Drive and disks (make sure it's got a SCSI cable). Hit up e-bay and you should be able to find one.

Its not weird at all. Its doing EXACTLY what its supposed to do, play one sequence AFTER the other. If you want the drums and the sample to play together, you have use them in the same sequence.

Thats what I'm saying K-Mello - if he thinks he's got the drums playing all the way thru each sequence, then there shouldnt be any reason why they don't play all the way thru each sequence in song mode - therefore, weird.

I get you playboy. I don't think he has the drums playing all the way thru each sequence though, at least that's not how I read his example. I guess we'll have to wait and see what homeboy says when he reads these.

Unlikely. You've got to get the right SCSI drive and cable otherwise it won't work. The most common ones are by Iomega - I dunno if Staples would sell something like that - just do some searches on the web, you're bound to fine one out there.

ok, i so i got my drums in the track one box below the sequence, and in the next sequence i put them in and it doesnt play. any help

Your best bet for finding a SCSI zip drive is going to be something like eBay or a computer store that sells used computer parts. You probably won't find a new SCSI Zip drive (everything is pretty much USB now), and even if you could, they are going to charge you way too much for it.

If you can swing the doe, you'll be better off in the long run if you get an external SCSI card reader from some place like scsi for samplers dot com. They run $150 + $10-$15 for the SCSI cable if you need one + $10 shipping, but they are much more reliable than ZIP drives and discs. Unfortunately the 2K classic cannot use an internal reader without major/expensive modifications. I ordered one of the SCSI card readers for my classic last week, should be here tomorrow or Wednesday. Hoping it will be a simple, reliable replacement for my Jaz drives, not that they are malfunctioning, but just trying to be proactive.

Song mode just plays your sequences in the order you want as many times as you tell it to. You can't expect to layer sounds in song mode because that is called sequencing, do all that in the Main screen. Once you have your patterns sounding how you want, then go into Song. In conclusion if you want your drums to play with your sample it has to sound like that in the Main screen.

so, would i make a drum loop in one sequence, then copy it to another sequence and lay the sample on top of that?

Copy your samples from one sequence to the next. If you're looping drums, do the same. Personally, I don't loop my drums as it gives me more options for adding variation to the beat in each sequence. The same with samples. I think it's fair to say most cats rocking the MPC will copy 1 sample to more than one pad and adjust the params to add a bit of variation to the samples as well. Same goes for the drums - use more than one copy of the kick and add some filter to that bad boy for a bit of colour.

That's just how I do it, but as they say, different strokes for different folks.
