i think the way to achieve good swing is not so much off setting all kicks snares but changing the velocity.
i usually chop up a drum beat
assign each part to a pad
then lay down the drums with time set to 1/16
then i go back on another track and turn time off
and 16 layer velocity on the hats or kicks or whatever
then i lay in the low hits
it creates a really swing style groove that is naturally off due to the way the sample was cut.
for example
if you sample a 2 bar drum loop and it loops at 84 bpm
and you sequence the beat at 84 bpm and chop your sample to that sequence you will find that very often the drums are allready off so there is no need to further the delay of the drums. they allready have the natural human feel, all i do is drop some hiphop flavor in the beat by doublin up or laying velocity.
this is probably confusing but i thought i would add my two cents.

do u guys just move the swing %. what about that "amout" feature that goes from 0-10, u guys mess with that? whats teh purpose of that i swear to god it messes the drums up.

i think people just need to practice.. it doesn't matter if you're good or not because you can record again and again until it's right :D i'm trying to learn to make good drums with quantize off because i find it's more fun that way.. all my recent beat are made with quantize off

amount means how many digits you want to move that certain sample on that particular sequence.. you should try that.. i use it very often

It doesnt matter, you could use quantize and your samples make your drum pattern sound off beat.

It depeneds how you freak it.

But....But.....

I never used the quantize, i dont even use the metronome.

I lay down the sample and let the sample tell me how to lay my drums down. its as simple as that.

...Ever since I started making beats I always felt that quantization was a set back... So when I started using controllers in Reason I would just play out my own groove. I still do that with my MPC; I seldom use swing settings.

i don't even use the swing feature.

i just use Step edit and move those notes a few ticks until they are grooving the way i want.

i hav ebeen chopping alot of breaks lately though.

and not chopping them completely.

been chopping a 1 bar break into 8 chops and playing them that way. That has helped me some.

sometimes i try to overcomplicate things that are really easy.

I've played drums for 14 years, and think quantize is great on mpc. Many people like the principal of using their own ears to create swing. Premo and Pete Rock etc....you can just hear so many times over that they are def using quantize.
No shame in using TC. And if you want some freaky madlib swing, put the kick drum swing up to about 72 or so....

if the point of using quantize is so that it doesn't sound like a machine is playing it, and u r saying that u can hear that they are quantizing, then how effective or good is it?

u r actually pretty much saying that u can tell that they didn't just play it that way, which doesn't make much sense.

haven't posted here in years...

my rule:

club stuff (the new hiphop sound) - quantize on - 60% is opretty hard to beat but also i use the macro settings omeone suggested here- you know shifting your hats back on the downbeats...

dusty stuff (the classic hiphop sound) - quantize off or maybe quantize the hats- quantize off for the rest and then redo the hats with quantize off

i find for the club stuff quantize helps you bang oiut beats very easily and then you can adjust later (you'll always need to adjust)

i don't desire the dilla sound- its cool but not for me although do like the sloppiness of madlib
