There are techniques for every situation (sound), so don't assume that Filtering and compression are needed for all your drums. Break beat records are good, but just about every record has something usable, from the 25 cent record, to the $100 record, a sound is a sound, and it's up to you to find the dopeness and chop it up.. everybody and their momma uses them same $20 break beat albums, so be different. Use your ears, and remember most recorded material had already been processed, so most of the work is already done for you.
U gettin it wrong.. the whole "new sound" thing that is "ruining music" is the loudness in the mastering stage.. from compressing limiting and turnin it up so loud.. its nothing to do with shaping ur sounds and a "fat" sound as aposed to the "loud" sound... nowadays the fat sound has been replaced with the loud sound, which is what is ruining music soundwise.. u got it wrong we're talking about the fat sound, im not even talking compression myself.. im talking filtering layering eq'n etc, if u understood the methods and how they can be applied to drums to make so much difference u wouldnt even be comin back how u are.
compression can be used to good effect with drums still.. but i wasnt even talking about, re read my post and think about it before responding.
I rarly use compression untill the mastering stage, hardly use it mixin at all.. but with my drums i'll occasionally use one on the hi hats with a real fast attack and big ratio to tighten them up so they more snappy and short
