The only difference is that the 8800 comes with VGA standard and has color screen. 8000 or 8800? After I sell my 2500 I'll probably still have enough to buy the 8800 and max it out and still have left over cash to spare.
Here's something to think about...
You're right they're basically the same machine. Another major difference is the 8000 comes with floppy drive plus the CD R/W drive. That's not a big deal unless you have many archive disc that were saved from older MPC's or other standard midi files.
The 8800 will have more factory sounds loaded along with having the color screen! There's a few other changes that were made to speed up the workflow, but nothing too major. The 8800 will also be supported with future updates. There's no bugs with the current OS, but Roland will often throw in new features with future updates to sweeten the deal and make user's happy.
If you can find an 8000 in good condition with the VGA included....you'll save major cash!!! The color screen on the 8800 is not a big deal because with the VGA you will have a large monitor screen which has the same colors as the 8800's onboard screen. You can also change the color scheme using the VGA. Other than that....both machines are the same. Again, there are no known problems or bugs with either OS data!
Below is a link that all MPC user's who are thinking about trying the MV should check out! It explains what to look for coming from an MPC setup. Most of the functions still exist, but just have different names! These pages will clear up lot's of confusion.
