You manually tell it the size and notes and it gives you the correct tempo, what more should it do?

i don't think i've used this function even once...asking for it to be even more automated though is looking for trouble because you're basing it on transients rather than your own numerical input
the latter is going to be more accurate for sure, because what if you have a violin melody that has no real transient? detect tempo is not going to be able to figure out squat, but if you knew it yourself you could input the params and have it detect the tempo within a couple bpms pretty easy.
detecting tempo is a very human thing, i'd not suggest on relying on a piece of hardware to do it.

i just wish it was able tomcome close too the bpm instead of being way off the mark

If you have anything even close to rhythm and count your beats then manually input them it pretty much on the mark.
The only time it doesn't work is when you do that stupid auto mess where it's inaccurate since as Antonym said it looking at peaks instead of time.
Giving the manual option was one of the best things JJ did, especially for those who had come from the 2kXL.
That was one of the reasons I could never see to support the Akai OS once JJ came out.
