working with drum programs

everytime i start a new beat it takes forever to put up a new drum program...and working with the same program again and again sucks too.how do you organize your drums?

assign the sounds you want to the pads you want.

How do I organize my drum sounds? I have a zip disk of just sounds. Kicks, snares, hats, samples, stabs, hihats, bass notes and sound effects. I load a kick and audition it, if I like it I assign it to a pad, next look for a snare that sounds good with that kick, assign it to a pad, etc. When I'm sampling, I save it to that disk first than anything in case I want to use any of those sounds on any additional beats. There's no filing system on teh old original mpc2000 so that's how I organize. One zip of sounds I sampled, one zip of sounds I downloaded or bought, one zip of vocal snippets, one of unfinished beats/sequences/songs, and one of finished beats/sequences/songs. Any beats that I'm ready to start shopping around to artists, I save them on my hard drive, in case any of the zips don't go bad I don't lose any of my finished work. Whatever way you do it.... If you put your snares, kicks, highhats and other instruments on the very same pads for every program you create, you can just flip thru through the programs and listen to your various songs and hear them with differnet instruments. Saves time and sanity.

i do that homer, always put my sounds on the same pads, but i need to organise my zip discs. I mean i just make beats and save em on my current disk, when its full, i move on to a new one. I get my sounds from records or say for drum soundz, i go back to some older zip discs. Im running out of names for drum sounds though

I use my computer to store the bulk of my samples, but I also have a 1GB hard drive along with the Zip on the MPC3000. I do understand you, especially about the naming. Since I've been working on my sample CD projects, I've gotten about 12 GB or more of samples. I also developed a naming scheme that suits me and save s my sanity.

Since you only got 8 letters, you have to be brief and very creative.

This is a naming technique I use.... say I grab a snare from the record...."Street Party" by Black Oak Arkansas....

I take the name of the Group, Black Oak Arkansas, and just call it BOA sn1....

now say I take a small sample that consists of bass, horn, etc whatever....I name it. BOAs1#3a1
BOA=Black Oak Arkansas
s1= side 1
#3=third track
a1=first sample


Now if I happen to chop that sample or grab another one from the same song, it would be BOAs1#3a2.....


BOA=Black Oak Arkansas
s1= side 1
#3=third track
a2=second sample


plus I keep a notebook of what I'm sampling and then log it into my computer later...just to keep trackof what I've used... you know, just in case...

btw, you can use more than 8 characters... it only shows 8 on the "track" screen....

if i sample from my dvd's, what ill do is....say for instance i sampled from the matrix i would list the name and what part of the movie i got it from, like st=start , mid=middle, nd=end, (i do this just in case i need to sample more bars to a sample, so i can find where i got it from)
Example: matrixmid, kpaxst, cruelined., note i only use this for movie samples.

this is just a suggestion, but wouldn't it be easier if you just list a short title of the movie like for instance,

@c14=at chapter 14


then if you chop that sample up

AmBt@c14a1
AmBt@c14a2
etc
or

AmBt@c14a
AmBt@c14b

then a different segement of the movie would be

AmBt@c22a
AmBt@c22b

DDA=Dog Day Afternoon
@c6=@chapter6

DDA@c6a1
DDA@c6a2

DDA@c6b



I prefer to use the number at the end instead of the letter because if you are going to copy the sound and chop it into someting smaller, it automatically puts the next number there for you as long as you don't change anything else about the name...

thats more precise method , but the title of the movies my be vague. but i like the chapter filing system.
