I often ran into the problem that my loops had small audible gaps after I chopped them, so I began to investigate the problem a bit more and found a major flaw in the functionality of the chop shop both of the original and JJ's OS.
I created a square wave in Audacity and transferred it into the MPC. Then I set the end to 200.000 samples and discarded the rest. Now I entered chop shop, divided the sample into 20 equal slices and converted them to sliced samples with a release of "0". In theory this should give me 20 slices each 10.000 samples long, right?
Well, the result is completely off and I end up with a total length of 188.267 samples of all the slices added.
Now I did the same thing again, but divided the 200.000 sample long square wave into only 2 equal slices. This should give me 2 slices, each 100.000 samples long, but in reality I got a total length of 198.365 samples.
But not only does the chop shop make the slices shorter, it also adds a fade-in and -out to each slice which can be really counterproductive if you chop beats that have a sharp transients at the beginning of the individual hits.
So even though you won't be missing those 10% of your samples straight away, they can result in audible gaps.
Now here comes the kicker: if you manually extract the slices, they are pretty much exactly the size they're supposed to be. But not only that, but also the fades disappear.
It seems as if this behaviour has been programmed into chop shop, and I wonder if it will be possible to take it out again?
