easy, darealbusyman asked
and hes got the answer, whats 'lame' about that?
i'm not lobbing for this feature, but i had feeling that he doesnt know
where is a place for doing such requests.
beside its not the time.
and hate to say that but from my experience 'lames' are usually
people who use the word 'lame', really :) prolly because they cannot find appropriate word to describe what they would like to describe.

thats still the same thread. one thread. not all thread.
and it was actually finished.

and what about your rantings in the 4.73 thread? your posts did not seem very relevant to the topic at all.
but actually i don't mind.

This thread is going south real quick, and I just about never post anything at all, but I actually was (somehow) :? compelled to type a thing or two, regarding the original couple of posts.

It's kinda amazing to me how anyone might feel let down by the infamous JJ "staff"!... These guys made the machine something that Akai had no intention of ever doing themselves(!) My 30 USD was well spent (already) with the first version of JJ OS that I ever installed. There has been gear I've owned that cost several times that of the 1000, yet barely was/is supported, or improved, on any scale close to what we're talking about here (JJ OS v4.73-x.xx)... Sometimes the bastards have the nerve to charge ya nearly as much (for an upgrade), as the original cost of the HW. I know the majority of musicians on the board could have written this same commentary, but I can't help but be amazed that some posts on here seem to be entirely absurd... I've got (?) pieces of gear I'd ship to "JJ" in a heartbeat, if there was any potential that a 3rd party programmer (such as "JJ") could add more/improve features to a piece!

Anyways-

MAIL FROM JJ about further OS Development
Okay I was asking JJ about feature requests and that's what he had to say:

quote:
Since the memory does not remain any longer, neither addition nor change can be performed. Moreover, the addition which deletes a function is not performed.Only correction of a bug is made from now on.

JUST AN ILL-CONCEIVED, CRAZY THOUGHT:

I'm not a electronic engineer, so don't bother to flame this, cuz it's a hypothetical idea...

The OS of the MPC 1000/etc. is probably stored on some type of flashable memory(?) Assuming that was the case, I think it COULD be possible that this physical memory/chip/whatever the hell it is COULD be swapped out for something with a larger capacity?!... Such an upgrade would allow for a larger "OS", but obviously is still limited by processing power available. More potential features/options might be a possible result? JJ's track record alone would have me likely to consider a HW upgrade cost, just so I could see what the next 30 dollar developer donation would bring...

Hell, I could only IMAGINE what SW updates "JJ" might be able to cook up for my Access Virus, Roland V-Drum Modules, etc.!!! For now- JJ OS's, NYM's pad mods, this Forum... not too many pieces of equipment have a community behind them like the MPC(s). I'm shutting up now, remaining hopeful that the newsgroup-style, 'after-school-fight' posts start to migrate over to an AOL chat room or something :-p

I think my jjos was a good value for $30. Very glad to have it!

Having said that, I don't really think JJ are going to be developing software for other platforms. My working theory is that they got their hands on the source code for the akai os (maybe former employee or contractor) and have been taking stuff that was coded for the 2500 and adding it to the 1000, and maybe some original coding as well.

And, yes, there is no more room in the gadget for a bigger program, so let's be happy with the nicely functioning thing we have. Its more than we paid for when we bought the 1k.

I think the opportunity arose because akai was keeping their os features down on the 1k to make the higher models more attractive.

As far as expanding the internal memory, I suspect that the whole chipset is designed for the size it is--no virtual memory, no reading off disk except in the load mode. I don't t think that there is any practical way to expand it without wrecking something.

well that's very downbeat and final -
being of an optimistic & inquisitive nature.
if anyone out there wishes to look into this, i think it would be great .
and hey - if it can't be done - no big deal. then lets be happy with what we’ve got.
i for one am tremendously grateful and respectful of what jj has achieved.
and would not dis it for one instant.
if it were possible to extend the OS flash ram - this would mean
we could look forward to loads more of jj's features. :D
what's wrong with that. :?:
is it not the whole ethos of the jj os to push the mpc1000/2500 to be ultimate of mpc's. :?: and push the level of software standards & design for akai to take on board, for the improvment future mpc's.

friend romans hip hop producers ... doh - there i go ....
