Reviews and questions about the entry-level MPC500

I notice a time stretch function. If I create a phrase at a specific bpm (say, 120), and set the time stretch mode, will the phrase stretch if I change the tempo of the sequencer (say, +/- 10 bpm), like, for example, Ableton Live?

If not, will the mpc 1000 -- other?

Thanks

No. Timestretch allows you to change the tempo of a sample(.wav file) without changing the pitch of the sample. So basically once you apply time stretch to a sample it's done. Changing the tempo of your sequence will not have any effect on a time stretched sample.I think what you are referring to is a patch phrase the mpc 1000 and 2500 both do patch phrase. :D

Checked the mpc-1000 manual, couldn't find "patch phrase". What I mean is that if I have a recorded loop at 120 on one track, and a midi track on another, can I change the overall tempo without changing pitch in real time?

This is a simple matter with Live, but the algorithm for time slicing the audio loop is probably complex, so it might not be possible even in the 1000... (That's probably why you need a full on computer and software solution; I can accomplish this with PadKontrol and my laptop/Live 6, but probably have to preset my loops to temp before using them in the MPC....)

PS just checked the video, but seems he was only taking a section of the loop; and the pitch changed with tempo, although I may be mistaken. From what I can tell, it is a solution to a different problem....)

Thanks,

Chuck

Well we know that the midi track will adjust in tempo, but to have the loop adjust to the new tempo you will have to apply a time stretch that is equal to your new tempo.

Ok so let say you want to adjust the tempo of the sequence from 120 to 140. Change the tempo to 140 and the midi channel adjust to the new tempo no problem, but the loop isn't going to play correctly. So you now have to go into trim mode and apply a timestretch to the loop and adjust it to the new tempo. Now the loop will play at 140 but at this point if you adjust the bpm of the sequence again the loop will once again play at an incorrect tempo. Timestretch is not a real time algorithm.

Keep in mind a time stretch of more than -/+ 20% starts to sound really un-natural with alot of artifacting.

I hope this helps :D
