i am going from the midi out of my controller to the in of my midi interface. from each out of the interface to the midi ins of sound modules. then i'm going from the thru of a module to the in of the mpc2000xl. when i hit the pads on the mpc, cubase does not record the sound? but when i play the mpc through the keys of the controller it records. can someone tell me the correct way to hook up an mpc?

You didn't mention where the audio outputs of your keyboard are going. Midi is only note information. Not sounds. It just tells the computer in the instrument's brains to play a particular sound. You need to hook some audio cables to its outputs and then, into your mixer and/or your MPC to hear it and to sample.

Peace.

Its sort of difficult to picture your set up, but I would go from the MIDI out of your controller to in 1 of the MPC. Use the four outs of the MPC to the MIDI ins of your modules. Go from MIDI out of you interface to input 2 of the MPC. This is the best way if you are sequencing on the MPC. If you are sequencing on cubase then leave like you have it.
