portable tables

Hey all..

Gonna be investing in a portable turntable for a little traveling i'm doing soon, but i'm torn between the Vestax HandyTrax and Numark PT01.

The spec's are pretty much the same but just wondering if anyone has any hands on experience to offer me.. things like, do they pump out any machine noise, sh*t like that,, which i wouldnt know without using one?

I personally own and love the vestax handy trax limited edition black (the black 1 is sexy)....only thing I would do is upgrade the needle, but other then that it has head phones jack, digital output etc you couldnt ask for more in a portable unit its prett sick...

oh also I mentioned to upgrade the needle, but thats ONLY if you plan on sampling from it otherwise if you just using it to digg, the needle supplied is more the n enough....

good luck homie, get what you like man because I dont think you can really go wrong with either and they are priced about the same vestax being a bit higher....

I've got a PT01 and I'd say almost the same thing H Hustle said... upgrade the needle if you want to sample from it, but for diggin it's dope. Runs for about 10 hours (roughly) on a set of D batteries.

I use the Numark PT01. I havent tried the numark yet, but i bought the Numark because of the size: not bigger than a 12" record, so it fits in my vinyl bag perfectly. I also bought the numark because the DJ store in my city has the replacement needles to it. Think about that aswell.

I like it well, and i have used it alot for digging the last two years. I dont use it for sampling tho', I dont think its the best TT for that. But I use it sometimes to listen to records in rooms in the appartement where I dont have a TT. I got both european and USA walladapters, and since I only use the TT with batteries outside, the batteries have lasted a long time.

The PT01 is a bit heavy with all the batteries inside, and you know vinyl weighs a ton, so I would also check the weight, as its supposed to be portable...

Its tricky to get through security checks on airports with it, as they dont know what it is. Maybe it looks like a bomb. When I went to London I had to go with the security people untill they found out it was not a bomb...

I also have a british Garrard 60's portable, that works perfectly with batteries (the needle was intact when i bought it pretty cheap for its mint condition), but it doesnt have headphones out so its not the best TT for digging in shops etc. Check it out:

My set of batteries has worked very much more than 10 hours! Many times as long.

But I guess this has to do with the quality and how much you pay for them...

Like HH I rock the vestax, and pretty much agree with everything everyone has posted.

Needles easy to find and batteries last for AGES, haven't even looked at the numark as I'm happy with what I got.

Deck Daddy, that 60's style Garrard looks dope.. and I've had pleanty of hassle from airport secuity myself: microphones, mpc, soundcard all suspect looking sh*t i suppose.

Anyway, decided to go for the Numark cause I've found it for £60.. then i'll upgrade the neddle cause I'm gonna be using it for sampling whilst traveling..

can anyone recommend a good replacement needle for the numark PT01.. just for sampling so a good quality one.

the stock needle is fine to me but i dunno if u differ from it

i think so.. i've compared a few records on the numark to my stanton which has the stock stanton st880 needle in it and there seems to be a reduction in low frequency and over all depth.. maybe i'm just tripping cause its new and i know i gotta depend on it for my work whilst traveling,, but it just dont seem to be pumping out the same quality.

so any takers? anyone replaced the needle? not even sure you can cause of the weird design.

no you aint tripping man, what you are hearing is EXACTLY what your hearing...

When I got my handy trax I went ahead and A-B'd my standard table with the portable table and the sound quality difference is obvious...

Like I said above, if you plan to use it for more then just digging changing the needle is a must...

I was in the "needle" market myself a few weeks back...and got alot of mixed feelings mainly because some needles are better for sampling some are better for scratching etc. I don't want to sway you because I don't know what your plans are for the table but I personally wanted something that was a good inbetween needle...I want something that was mainly good for sampling but would also be a good needle for scratching and listening if I chose to...any how long story short I went with "SHURE M44G" They are a bit pricey when you stop and think that the needle costs almost as much as the pt-01 but honestly man its worth it...I questioned it myself but when I finally hooked the beast up my ears were tingling with joy....

myte not be the same for you, but with research I think you will find that there really isnt anything bad that can be said about the M44G...

You can fit a M44G to the PT01?

Coud I fit any needle to it then?

Is there anything about the PT01 I have missed?

I thought I only could use the stock needle...

if i'm not mistaken the pt01 use a Pmount cart you cant put a m44 inless you rig it some how, and in that case you will need to balance out your needle and with no weight i just dont see it

co-sign.. would love to see a mod of the PT01.
I spoke to Numark to see if they could suggested a highly quality needle but they didnt know sh*t, they recommended taking it into a pro hifi store and seeing what they suggest.

I'll post what i find out (if anything)
