Smpte...

I know it's timecode for recoding, but can anybody tell me how this works?

c'mon man...nobody uses smpte...

there is a midi timecode that is a similar timecode as smtpe but not as tight with the timing. smtpe is for syncing to video vtrs and other applications like that where you need accurate syncing. for music though everyone uses midi clock cause it deals with bars and beats instead of seconds like smtpe.

there is a smtpe option you can get for the mpc that allows you to use the smtpe outputs on the back of the mpc.. cost money for the chip though but you get tighter timing with the smtpe timecode.

Most people wont be using it, but if you have the option to use it, the timing is way tighter than midi. Not installed on the XL by default, only the studio versions.

I am now using it to sync up 2 mpcs. I didnt have the chip on my 1st XL, so I found one off ebay (pretty uncommon). Bad thing about syncing with midi is that then you are also sending over all the other midi data along with the timecode, and that was no good for me.

Studio Cats use SMPTE to lock up Analog MTR (Multi Track Recorders), you could use it to track on 2" tape Ampex (Quantegy) 456, 499, etc....

As well as post production for Movies, if the Music depends on visual cues.

And if you dont have the 8 out option you could use your Stereo out to Track on Pro tools (one with USD {[universal Slave driver}) to lock it up that way.

And you can probably use it to Generate time code to stripe tape with TC.
