Basic MIDI question

Hey I am new to my MPC and JJ OS and I am trying to figure out how to hook up my MicroKorg to my MPC with MIDI. I want my MicroKorg to be the master and the MPC to be the SLAVE (in other words, I want to play/record my Korg notes through the pads on the MPC). Right now i got it working the opposite way, (my MicroKorg is the slave).

Could somebody please give some step by step instructions, i tried looking at the manual but it is too confusing.

slave/master refers to sync settings, which you wont need unless you want your fx timed by the mpc´s clock. So just connect MicroKorg Midi In with Mpc Midi Out.

rinseout - thanks, i tried your suggestion and for some reason it still doesnt work. i thought that by hooking up your synth to the MPC with MIDI cables it would just work automatically, but maybe i need to change some settings in MIDI mode? again, i can get my MPC notes to play on the Korg, but i wanna play my Korg notes on the pads.

so by using your MPC MIDI OUT into the korg MIDI IN, it wont work that way? thats strange...

Not nessesarily true but I see where you're coming from.

Not knick pick'en or anything, but he already said he had the micro as the slave. Just pulling you up on some thangs yo.

BS, never heard anyone calling midi in "slave"

maybe some people are confused at what master and slave actually are...

the master midi device is the machine that is giving the "orders" or instructions. it will be used to "control" the other devices

the slave is the device that will take the instructions from the master.

if you want to use the MPC to play the soudns from the MK, you need to use the midi out on the mpc to the midi in on the MK which will give the MPC control over the MK like rinseout said.

if that dosnt work then im lost.....it sounds like you have the mk midi out going into the mpc midi input.

if im wrong, please correct me so that I know...

naw, i definitely tried connecting it the way you guys are saying but i am getting nothing.

I select a new MIDI track and select 1A on the main screen (the same port as my output) and then nothing . . . is there something i should be doing differently on the main screen maybe?

im stumped, bro. sorry. and i bet its some really obvious that we're both overlooking...I had a MicroKorg and I actually had to connect it a little different then my other gear. I just cant remember how everything was setup.....

oh, have you tried the handshake method?
try connecting the mpc midi out -> mk midi in , and mk midi out -> mpc midi in.

not sure what difference that will make but worth a try i guess

artful, thanks for the suggestion, man, but i def tried connecting it both ways . . maybe i should try the "bitchslap method" instead, haha. anybody else got ideas?????

I've always understood you have your master (controller) & slave (reciever or recipient) devices. This does'nt pertain to just sequencing, it's also recieved by other midi capable stuff too. To be honest, it does'nt really matter what you call it as long as you know what its purpose is. As a matter of fact, a lot of you were'nt even born when midi came about so what's all the fuss about anyway.

have you set your settings correctly in the MIDI/SYNC screen on your MPC?

you need to make sure that info corresponds.

i.e. the MPC set to master for the corresponding MIDI out port that your
connecting the MK to.

also the MPC will not be setup to send MIDI notes chromatically, you'll have
to knock up a program for this. easy to do, just make a new program, go
to program edit, press the NOTES tab, and re-arrange the numbers in there
so they're in order from lowest to highest.
