Post your views and questions about the Akai MPC2500

so im currently using an mpc 1000 that i bought cheap... and trashed, (only three pads working) and have pimped it out...


latest jj's, maxed ram, 2g cf card... no hd yet but shit... i dont know why i need it with the usb connectivity...


a kid i know is selling his 2500 fairly cheap... i was going to buy it as i assumed it was way better than the 1000 and it had better midi capabilities seeing as how i would like all my gear to function in unison without constanly reconnecting cords as i go... ( i have a electribe, the red tube one, a s950, a micron, protools, and a turbo phatt)

however im reading all these horror stories about pads on the fritz, 16 levels not working, freezing, mtc problems when syncing...


whats the deal... is this the next logical step in mpc's or should i go a dif avenue and keep my 1000 which really has never let me down ( cept for those damn pads... it really is a tragedy that they suck so bad...)


it just would seem nicer to work on a big rig instead of the puny littly 1000 all the time... i used to have a 3000 in highschool and i never really used it... but i remember that it was awsome feeling ( traded it for a mint gibson les paul)


if i didnt hate the idea of zip disks and scsi drives i would probably just buy one again... plus i hear that the timing on those is real tight...


anyways... can anyone that really uses the machine hard on a daily basis vouch for its reliability... all the stories im hearing sound like they would drive me to drink... alot... and probably get violent on th mp. :twisted:


the sync thing really really bothers my cause i track out all my beats once thier finished no exceptions...

the price hes askin is $800 btw ( present from mom&dad, i guess the idea of producing wore off 8) )

i went from the 1k to the 2500 and have never looked back. i can't guarantee the same experience, but the only thing i really regret was not waiting for the 2500 in the first place...

ive been lurking around on this site for years and ive never even heard of any of these problems with the 2500, i got one very used, had a shorted out slider and all sorts of other shit, i just bought a new one from vst soldiered it on and cleaned it up, injected some hot jj love into it, and ive never been happier with a purchase...and i had to save for months of agonizing eating shit food to get it!

I bought mine used
Ive never had a problem with it
Its syncs up to pro tools fine and I got it in mint condition
I knocked off a 7 eleven to get it
I wanted a 3000 but no usb and hardrive features
Best peice I have purchased

i had a 60 then a sp 1200, but realized how much time i was waisting w/o usb for all my drm samples.

i knew enough ppl who had the 2500 and 1k in real life to go with the jj os. i've talked to forat about the 1k and 2.5k as well. I was specifically worried about the pads. Forat said the mpc 1k has the worst pads out of any MPC. The reason being is because the pads are on individual sensors. For other mpc's the sensors are on a sheet and the pads are on a sheet. This distributes the energy from the impact of hitting the pads across a sheet rather then an individual pad sensor. So the bottom line is the mpc 1k pads wear out quicker especially if ure hitting them with a good amount of force.

So you got the answer to your question right? And extra information was also supplied, granted you didnt ask for it. But when in life do you ever get free advice, above and beyond, what you asked for. And yeah, most of us are smart asses, bored at that.

So there are a few posts on this site with people getting stuck pads and having an MTC issue (which I believe has been resolved in latest OS). - So what!???? There are going to be many more people out there who find the 2500 is doing the job, and doing it reliably.

I had the thing lock up on me yesterday, but I mananged to get out of it (See my other post in this forum).

The thing to do is make sure that you save your Projects frequently, to different named folders, so that you make a 'history' of you project. This way you can return to your project at any key point.

I don't think that's the reason, it's just that those individual sensors are crap. If they were designed properly, it would work just as good. If the pressure would be distributed over the whole sheet, you would be constantly triggering 2 or more pads, wouldn't you?

not necessarily. If you designed the os , so that at least a bare minimum of force had to be applied before it even recognized a trigger from a sensor.

i'm sure with enough testing groups u could quickly and easily determine a good average minimum force that should be applied b4 the os even registered that it was being triggered above velocity 0.

You would also make sure that no other pads triggered on the sensor sheet from one or multiple pads being struck.

So by that rationale, (!) if you set your PADs to the minimal velocity setting in the Options, you should experience this problem less? :?:

Basically right...but I imagine that this minimum force (that is allowed to "leak" onto an adjacent pad) would have to be so low, that it doesn't make much difference if you take a separate sensor, or let the pressure spread over the sheet. Anyway, doesn't make much sense arguing about that, as we don't know what's really the deal.

All I have to say that the 2500 to me is worth it. I started with the 1000 and still have it with the JJ O.S and I still love both of them. I never had a bunch if problems with either of mine but always adored my 2500 a little more. I like the little extra options like more outs and cd drive even though it dont matter to many and plus I still believe theres more to come with it :wink: I think I said too much :D Still if I had to choose I would take the 2500 over the 1000 which I believe may have had more technical issues with it than the 2500. With that said....go with the force young Jedi and you will not regret it in the long run. :wink:

Get the 2500 it's a very good investment I just got one and don't regret it one bit, the hardware is solid, the pads are good, you get a nice set of new features, it's one of the newest MPC so it still has a long life ahead of it, don't get scared of the reported issues if you know your shit you can work around the little bugs, there is nothing that should stop you from making hot music!
