Can we start a forum topic where we pick out samples from tunes and see if the record we think they're sampled from is the same as what everyone else thinks? For example :-

In 'Insane in the membrane' by cypress hill, there a short brass loop (it only loops twice, i think) just before he says ' cops come and try to snatch my crops' and i think its from the beginning of 'Life' by Sly and the family Stone. Does anyone agree?

I know, I'm a total nerd, but i love this sh*t!

could be that it's just a cover from someone else's OG song.....i have run into songs like that that the OG version sounds much more different then let say a remix or a cover and the cover became moore popular, cant remeber off the top of my head but i have run into a few songs like that ......oh one i do remeber but i'm still trying to figure this one out FAME by DAVID BOWIE right every one knows that one but JAMES BROWN has the same beat on his REALITY album.

now i have to check to see what yrs are on those records, but i would have never guessed that DAVID BOWIE sampled that from JAMES BROWN or vise versa

I was surprised to realise samplin was at work in the 60's. The Maledictus Sound s/t 1968

http://www.aural-innovations.com/issues/issue17/maledict.html

When I heard the crazy synth diving around in the background of the track "Kriminal theme" I realised straight away it had been sampled. In the review linked above it mentions

"There's lots of horns, but along with this are spaced out synths unlike anything I've heard from a 1968 recording"

Those synths were sampled from Pierre Henry's "Jericho Jerk" released in 1967 the year before.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pierre_Henry

Made me laugh and also wonder what copyright enforcement was in place for sampling back in the 60's

footnote: Jericho Jerk was also sampled on D'Angelo's Devil's Pie and Fat Joe's Dat and many more me thinks....

u guys not heard of the melotron? check it out. it used stretches of tape that were triggered when a key was pressed. these tapes had either flute or string sounds recorded (sampled) on to them. dates back to mid 60s i think

Reality was end of 74, Fame was 75, Bowies I can answer as my uncle was a session musician brought in at the last minute to record the track at the Power Plant (he was on their books for years, working on many a project or OST) I spoke to him tonight as I remember him telling me stories of Bowie & others, he also mentioned that the whole track was recorded in one sitting and that John Lennon who I have found out since had an influence on the track also provided additional backing vocals.

My uncle recons that it could be purely coincidence for the similarity as many of the styles of that era used a "safe" pattern for the radio and suits that took control of the music world round then.

i've since googled and some of the info is there too which is kinda weird hearing it first hand then reading it, didn't look too deep so couldn't say anything about reality at this point.
