recording question

alright, i've got a question in recording your tracks to the pc. i'm working with the mpc 2000 xl. for example i have 4 tracks on the mpc that i want to record to the pc. drum kick track, snare track, hihat track and a sample track. (i don't have the 8 outs) so i have to do one track after another. i want those 4 tracks also on the pc so i can put some effects on each track.

1. i record the drum kick into the pc
2. i record the snare into the pc on another track
3. i record the hihat on another track
when i do so i have to put a button in the software record and then i have to put the button play on the mpc so it records. so when i record each track individuely i normaly have on one track more space in the beginning where no sound is coming and on the other track it starts imadiately with the sound. so when i want to listen to all tracks together i doesnt match anymore.

is there a trick that this doesn't happen anymore or can you synchronise the pc and the mpc??? so when i put the button on the pc record, the mpc starts automatically playing the song from the beginning you don't have to out the button start manually??

MIDI is the answer!

I do the same thing also without the 8outs. But I sync my mpc with cubase using midi. I didn't have a good soundcard with midi options so I bought a cheap midi interface for my pc. I got two midi cables and hooked it up to my mpc. Now if I press record in cubase, my mpc will automatically start playing.

YOU NEED TO MIDI YOUR MPC TO YOUR PC, SO THAT WHEN YOU PRESS RECORD ON YOUR COMPUTER, IT AUTOMATICALLY PLAYS YOUR MPC IN SYNC WITH YOUR OTHER TRACKS. THAT'S HOW I DO IT! JUUICE

If you have an audio interface with midi in/out ports, you can do it with just that.

So basically you need to connect your pc to your mpc with both midi cables and audio cables. If you don't have midi in/out on your audio interface, buy a cheap midi interface for your pc.

Well, your firebox has 6 inputs so if I was you I'd try to find a good deal on the 8 out board for your mpc so you could record 6 tracks at once.


The firebox has a midi/spdif connector so you don't have to get an additional midi interface for your pc.

If you hook it up like in the pic, you just need to set up your mpc and pc to midi sync. I can't remember what exactly you need to do, but basically you need to go into the midi menu of your audio software and mpc and set them up both for something like midi clock. It's pretty simple really. First time I tried this I couldn't get it to work since I only had one midi cable. When I got a second midi cable this worked perfectly right from the start.

thank you so much. so you think its better buying the 8 outs board? if i buy it i really don't know how to install it and when someone elses does it it costs me a lot of money. i don't know but in my onpinion the 8 outs aren't really important for me at the moment. of course you are faster but when i do a song i normally don't have too many tracks.

but what do you think about the firebox? do you think this would be a good investment? it actually provides everything i need for the moment.

Well, I don't have the 8outs board (yet) either but I have a good deal on one so I'm gonna install them soon. I'm just saying that it might be wise to keep an eye on the second hand market and if you see one at a good price, get it.

Presonus have a very good reputation for audio interfaces. I don't think you can go wrong with this.

i have the 8 outs but what you can do is:

if you have it midi-synced to the pc is mute all tracks, press record in your pc-recording program, the mpc will start playing; after each sequence you unmute another track, then cut the tracks rearrange and play it!

I tried this but when I press play it picks a sound from the third pad and only plays it. Any suggestions?

I mean when I press record on the computer

I'm using Sonar LE and as a interface Edirol UA-25. I have the midi cables going from the MPC to the interfaces midi in's and out's.

Pressing record only triggers the third pad that plays like the metronome..

Help? Anyone?

After making a beat I usually set my pc ready to record and I manually set my mpc ready to record fully to the pc. Am I doing it all wrong?
