help me with digging...

i've been lately trying to do research. And i mean i've visited sites like Soul-Strut (never been on there and man it's competitive and a bit hardcore for me) and it's just hard for me to research cos most of the names people saying to check are so obscure i'll have to pay £60 for that ish. It's quite annoying being a noob in ish such as digging.

What i'm trying to do at the moment is find out about UK jazz artists because i've come to realize theres not much of a chance I'll find us funk and jazz all over in UK charities and at places other than record stores selling it for £10. Does anyone know the really essential pieces i should own 1965 onwards, you know the classic ones so i can build my knowledge (no stuff below 1960 please) Could someone drop some knowledge without getting too obscure?

also any preferred sites with info on UK jazz, funk, etc on it (not forums please)

I can't really help with the UK jazz artists info. but I can just say that you should not lose hope. I'm new at this too, and it's easy to get frustrated with so many know-it-alls out there, just keep at it.

I'd suggest googling UK jazz artists names you know of and linking them to other musicians they've played with, then checking their names in Wikipedia etc.

Buy stuff that you think has a cool cover for your collection, that may only cost a few bucks (pounds,yen... whatever), whereas if you listen to folks on soul-strut you'll end up with way overpriced vinyl that everyone already knows about. The more you visit your charity shops the more you'll see what is a high-volume pressing (i.e. not obscure), so that when you do come across a new cover, you can snag it.

don't get me wrong man i ain't wantin people do digging for me. I'm looking for you know the really essential pieces cos i really know **** all about UK jazz. You know the Herbie Hancock, Miles Davis of that ish. The only guy i know whos from the UK is John mclaughin really.

well, sorry to bust your bubble but even some of those are grip, maybe cause i live in the US and i have to pay shippin and all that ,I PERSONALLY DONT BUY IMPORTS.in less i find it for free or under ten bucks........ thats just me.

you can start by going to your local charity shop and looking there, research on google in stead of forums ,cause if you just getting started and you go to them forums they will eat you alive , you can see that has happen to you already. that site is for indepth diggers, although theres good people on there. they can get pretty phatheaded sometimes.

i have been doin this for 30 yrs and i get ripped on there to but i dont trip cause i know some the dudes on there personally. they have come to my store.

U will find it man.. u can come across all sorts at charity shops.. u just need to know what u lookin for.... u probably gone passed loads of breaks just not known it.

Also dont limit urself to certain genres which is what u seem to be doing, u have to go outside of the funk / soul / jazz sh!t as well.. and u will find breaks just as good and better... even some of the wierdest bullsh!t music that an inexperienced digger would laugh at has the most dope breaks in there, u just wont know untill u experienced steppin outside the box and diggin for more then the "usual" sources that the untrained ear would assume to be the main lookout for breaks.

Excuse my sh!t example... but yeah if i ran u through a few of my records i could soon show u exactly what i mean.

I cant help you dig you have to go and do it yourself. No ones gonna hold your hand.

maybe instead of limiting yourself to UK artists, maybe consider looking for European artists as a whole. I'm sure if you dug hard enough, you'd find all the Muza (Polish Jazz) and MPS (German Jazz) joints you could handle.

the only record label better than mps is blue note. is all i'm saying...

Hey thanks 4 that! Nice site Good to see a site thats for UK diggers as most things i've seen are for the US ppl saying what they think is out here.

hard enough, you'd find all the Muza (Polish Jazz) and MPS (German Jazz) joints you could handle.

Muza joints are hard to find round here really without paying up.
