I'm a little confused, I've heard people say that the MPC1000 is capable of stretching samples without changing tune, kinda like the 2000XL and 2500. However I see nothing on the Akai website that says it has this feature. The more I research the more contradictory things I hear. What's the deal? Only reason I'm asking is I just ordered a 2000XL off ebay, great deal, but the seller is being unresponsive and hasn't shipped the product yet after over a WEEk.. so I was thinking about getting my money back and getting a 1000 instead. About the limit of my budget. Anyway, if any of you have a definite answer to this question I'd really appreciate it. Thank you

it does do timestretch without changing pitch, but you have to have the latest OS update. the original OS (1.07) couldn't do it, but all the subsequent ones could, including the JJ OS, which i highly recommend that you look into.

i was on the wire between a 2000XL and a 1000 too, but i feel pretty good about my decision to go with the 1000. only complaint i have is that the pads don't feel as good as the 2000XL (mine haven't lost functionality, yet) but it's far more powerful and portable, especially with the JJ OS.

It can timestretch very well and it can create patched phrases too that can be sped up or slowed down without changing the pitch.

If you want to see it live in action, look at these 2 videos:

Mind you, these 2 cats are using the official Akai OS. I use the JJ OS which is WAY better! So the procedure for doing it in the JJ OS is slightly different than what you're about to see, but works basically in the same manner.

^ wow that works a lot better than I thought! would you say the 2000Xl is better, worse, or about the same when it comes to patch phrasing? it looks like the dude I ordered it from is comin through lol. maybe I'll re-sell the 2kXL if I'm not feelin it.

problem with patch phrase is that if you don't chop really small pieces, and speed or slow down a lot, you'll get a swing, and the feel of the drum pattern will change. This is illustrated clearly on one of those videos on youtube. I don't see what it's really useful for, when there is a timestretch feature with so many presets. Although, patch phrase should lose no quality, whereas timestretch will generally end up a little stanky if you change the tempo too much. I only really use it for plus or minus 7 bpm or so.

try the 2000xl for a while.

I'm thinking i might trade my 1000 for a 2000xl or just get a 2000xl to supplement what i've already got. they've all got their place.

True...but here's the trick my brotha. Sample a 2,4,8 or whatever bar loop. Next hit Zone F3, then Edit F5. You should see (Slice Sound) Set End Margin to 16 - hit Do It...done deal. 16 chops at any tempo you want without changing the pitch.
Peace

not true. you speed up the tempo, and it cuts off the samples each time another pad is played. you slow down the tempo, and it begins to have gaps between the samples. definitely not the same as patch phrase.

if you switch to the 2000xl, there's definitely things you'll like. tiltable screen, trimming samples is 1000 times easier, the pads are better, no real bugs... i had the 2000xl for 6 years, and it only froze on me once.

the main reason i got rid of the 2000xl to pick up the 2500 was the internal hard drive and the ability to connect to pc via usb. i was done dealing with SCSI. i didn't get the 1000 when it came out because i went to guitar center and i just didn't like it. the main reason being the pads.

patched phrase is for people who are too impatient to chop and resequence the sample. every time something itches me to try a patched phrase, i always scrap it and just chop it into pieces. waaaaay more control, and only takes a minute longer to do.

It works for me ova here.
