anyone produce techno/trance/house?

just wondering who here produces techno trance or house, or something else besides hip hop. ive been wanting to get into making some techno and house beats and was wondering if anyone can give me some direction (i know we all hate when people ask for handouts). i've been trying to find a more specific techno beat making message board or some kind of resource on the internet but couldn't find anything. any help is appreciated.

how about: transcend all styles and genres and do your own dayum thang?

get a kick on each beat, a snare on every other beat, and go wild with the hi hats. chuck a synth or two in there, and you're done.

lol not really, i mean there's a damn lot more than just the kicks on each beat and snare on every other.

and yes i'm also a preacher of do your own thing your own style and all that. but how i developed my own style in my hip hop production is through learning from others and mimicking. and i mean there seems to be a real lack of sources on the internet for beats thats not hip hop.

Man! i make Hip Hop all the f%$#@ time, but there was i time that i was using my mpc to make house, D'n'B, Dub reggae/Dancehall and fu(k@d up shit!
doing drums for and style of music in the mpc is perfect, and sampling vocal hits and sounds are great, i would also sequence all my synths!
The mpc is great for any genre, just get creative!

I make a lot of hard house and hardcore and dabble with tribal here and there. In terms of teaching you how to make it; i really can't help you. Some producers are really into sampling, some are into software, and others are dedicated hardware heads and I am kinda like cross between them all- i guess it all depends what you are comfortable with. At the end of the day you will have to have a decent handle on filters and effects no matter how you are going about making house tracks. My biggest barrier was and still is synth programing - there really is a ton to learn...but once you have your boards programed with sounds you can work with, it is actually pretty easy to produce. Also, I found the MPC to be difficult to use to make house tracks with keyboards and I basically only use it for drums and samples when I am making house tracks. I found that using a computer sequencer was better because you get a better visual of the track and can literally see how it flows; plus drawing in automation versus doing it in real time or step edit was a huge plus.

i sterted out wanting to make house cause i was playig in clubs in the 90's and i wanted to play my own music but it didnt work out that way i ended up goin back to my roots of hiphop, but i still try to make some house stuff and techno, but i dont really put it out , theres to much to have to keep on top of. i just want to make some deep dpwn funky acid house and chicago techno.

This tip is mentioned often, but often forgotten. It works for all styles. You grab a short loop from a track that has the sound you are going for and load it into the MPC. Then try duplicating all the sounds with your own kits over the original loop. This will help you really pull the track apart to see what sounds are being used and how it is programmed. Then you can go over and refine your program with different samples to fit the new style.

Techno is kinda a huge genre, so to say you want to produce it is a bit general. What type of techno you wanna make? Detroit / Minimal / Euro / Acid /Gabba etc.


As far as I'm concerned Techno is Detroit and Detroit is Techno. Most other 4 beat dance tracks, (house / electro / tech house etc) have their roots buried in Techno.
When I was out at clubs all the time, you could hear a brand new techno track with some clever drop in, or strange hat pattern. And then 2 months later it was out there in the commercial world from the likes of Underworld or Orbital / Chem Bros etc.

But whatever you think of, "Techno Techno Techno" type techno, the original format is, in my opinion, the best genre of dance music to produce. Because as Mr ModnaR says, you should really just do what feels right to you, and you gets tons of freedom with techno. Lots of famous people have produced Ambient and passed it off as Techno, Dave Clarke, Oliver Ho, Kraftwerk of course and many more.

Listen to tons of techno and thats what you'll produce. There is no one formula that you can use, get out in the clubs. Try to screw it up and put 4 beats to it! I actually find using 2/2 time sig instead of the 4/4 gives you that militant euro stomp, if you want that.

Techno should sound like something repressed trying to escape - one of the old Detroit boys said that. Maybe Mad Mike.

But my final advice is, if you dont know where to begin, start with the detroit lot, you cant go wrong.

if you want to mimick styles for making techno, i'd try the
matthew herbert-"sample-everything-in-the-kitchen-that-makes-noise-and-make-a-album-outofit" approach.
