there is a list compatible SCSI drives on akai's website. i suggest you start with that.
regardless of make most SCSI drive will work i hear so it's worth a shot if you find one for a really good price.
as for me... i do use sample cds. at the moment, i just extract them off the cd onto computer and then load them into my mpc via zip. i do have a cdrom hooked up to my mpc but that's mainly for achieving the programs i've created (plextor SCSI drive). in my opinion, extracting sample cds on computer is much faster than going through all the different partitions and preview each sound file via mpc (especially loops). CDxtract, Awave and Chicken Translator are but a few of the software titles available that do this process.
it's too bad the mpc doesn't use the *.sf format otherwise this process would be a lot less mentally fatiguing.. however, there are ways around that with software such as mpc editor (
