el michels affair, budos band, all that dap tone type stuff we always look for from last century but came out last week...

enlighten me...I avoid messing with it, because it just feels weird... "slow down" edie brickell sample always made me feel weird too...on some eminem/dido rmx type stuff... it's like autobiographies at 30 years old, naming a stadium after the still-current coach, or whatever...

Are you aware that probably your favorite beatmakers/producers sample pretty current stuff from time to time. It doesn't have to just be 30+ year old music you are sampling.

Did you know that DJ Shadow sampled Nirvana on endtroducing?

Did you know that DJ Premier sampled Edie Brickel's What I Am for a remake of the song?

Did you know Brand Nubian sampled the same song when it was still pretty current, and it's a Hip Hop classic?

What makes you any lesser or better? A sample is a sample.

Yes. That's why I mentioned it in my post. It always made me feel weird, with how popular and current the edie brickel song was, in relation to "slow down." And hey, post up all the "Hip Hop Classics" would ya?

Sure, but I think sampling is even better when there is a point of reference...nods to previous usages of the sample... There are a lot of things that make a great sample, above and beyond just the sounds...context and provenance are pretty important to me. You know when you hear a sample and you "get it?" "Ohhh, dude used THOSE drums because other dude used that part in this song which referenced THAT song" etc etc etc...and it does get that deep sometimes...that's what I like...

And as for whether Premeire wears boxers or briefs: I do not care. DJ Shadow had a goatee for a while. Just because these guys made great songs does not mean they should be role models for everything... Michael Jordan is an adulterer and gambling addict, but all I care about is what he did on the basketball court...
