sampling is perhaps the weakest part of the MPC...

Gotta laugh - I'm reading through the Beat Making on the MPC2500 eBook. Thumbs up to the ebook BTW, its very good information. On page 23 it sez "sampling is perhaps the weakest part of the MPC - the main use of the MPC is the sequencer".

With no fade out ability and no multi sampling, the MPC is no way better than my Triton Extreme or Fantom X6 in the sampling manipulation department. And there's problems in playback - noticeably slow attack and a DC offset click at the end of short kick drum samples. So the sampling is not ideal. Fortunately I was intending to make it the centre of a MIDI rig anyway.

What do you guys think? Is the main use the sequencer for you?

I think the guy was trying to get his point across about sequencer being that solid in comparison to it's sampling capabilities

imo -using the mpc as only a sequencer is nuts. unless your doing some kind of techno steez and gotta go crazy with fx.

sampling is fine to me

i tend to use it just for sequencing as i have a lot of outboard gear to control,it does have a great sequencer (mpc1000),we also use it extensivly in our live setup playing back loops....,but as a standalone sampler in the studio ,i dont really use it like that

You ARE silly, bro.

Many people use JUST the sequencer only to sequence external samplers and keyboards via something ancient called MIDI.

MPC's sampler are only phrase samplers, unless you have the 4K that has a full sampler.

I'm cool with using the MPC to trigger external gear with MIDI, but how is the timing? Isn't the rock solid timing because the MPC plays the sample directly instead of sending the MIDI 3 byte note on message? Wasn't there so much talk about 'midi slop' and bad timing years ago?

I am going to experiment with triggering drums on some external gear, I've got lots of good drum sounds already there.

I think its a great sampler. I've had the Fantom X7 before and there are more options, but honestly, I didnt like sampling into it. I did it cause I could, but I didnt like the way the Fantom handles the samples. The MV prolly handles them better. But I like the simplicity of the MPC. The options of the roland gear were kinds overwhelming for me. I just needed to chop it and rock it.

By the way, when I said the Fantom didnt handle the samples well, I meant i didnt like the way the sequencer handles the samples. The Fantom is a great piece of gear. Whatever works for you though.
