anyone produce techno/trance/house?

I'm not a big fan of trance, etc. I mostly listen to hip hop, jazz, dub, funk, etc, but, back in the mid-to-late 90's the drum & bass scene in New York, Boston, etc. was definitely not just white people who couldn't dance. Actually, there was some of the sickest breakin' I've seen - by people of all skin colors.

Why mention their colour then? - Hmmm, could just have said that you think the music and the people that make it has/have no soul, and you don't like it - everyone is entitled to their opinion, but bringing colour into it is just plain stupid.

Not really my style either. For D&B I dig the old hip hop influenced ish, DJ Zinc, DJ Hype, Sniper, Freaky Flow and some of the watery new lounge ish is cool.

Trance in my opinion is and has been wack for a long time...same effing leads and played out sounds.

Hardcore is my ish and I know a lot of people will hate on it because it pretty much sounds like a skipping Atari with a lot of distortion. I have played it, made it, and loved it for over 12 years now and something about a distorted 909 and a Juno 2 gets me pumped. A lot of cheesy HC out there but def. check out the Italian and Rotterdam stuff from guys like DJ Paul, Stunned Guys, Rotterdam Terror Corps. Buzz Fuzz & Neophyte.

House has some DECENT stuff coming out now but pales in comparison to the stuff from 96-1999 coming out of Chicago and LA on labels like Abstract and UC - it seems like that sounds and movement pretty much died with DJ Attack. Right now I am pretty much only buying tribal out of the house scene and it is some pretty solid stuff. Check out labels like Intenso, Stereo Productions & Iberican and names like D-formation and Julian Poker.

I'm more into funky breaks myself, the whole Florida scene, but also the Nu-skool breaks from the UK as well...I kind of want to avoid the whole 303/808/909 thing as much as possible, but I'm definately wanting to check out the new gear from Waldorf, Novation, Alesis, MFB, and some others.....I won't get too involved into software, since there's just something hands on about gear that I love, and I hate using the mouse on most software sequencers....Don't get me wrong, I love what they do and all, and they do cool things, but you almost have too many choices when it comes to VST synths and effects. If all I did was chase after every new softsynth, I doubt I'd get any music made! I'd rather start with a few modest machines, and learn how to learn how to make them blend together, and then if the idea is good, record it.

One thing about techno producing is sometimes electronic music in general can quickly outdate itself. The Hoover effect, the trance rez lead (Are euro trance producers that effing lazy to find a new synth sound???), and the same 909/808 kicks....I'm kind of inspired by some of the lo-fi gritty sounds from hip-hop, and heck, even indie rock! I'm going to experiment with mixing dirty with clean, and see how they work together...I might even buy the oldest mixing board I can get for cheap and see if that might give me a way to do it. If it doesn't work, there's always s950s, sp1200's, and the like to get me there......

My advice to you might be just to see what synth sounds you're looking for, and then ask if you can do it with gear or software. Either way, I would check out new mp3's or vinyl of different genres, artists and producers. Let your ears be on the lookout for how they sound like they do. Sometimes at a party, the best tracks a dj spins don't sound like anybody else's track, and that's the magic you should always try to capture. Who wants to sound like every other producer? Anyway, just keep reading on what new gear is out there, and any forums that discuss the old gear as well. Try to avoid the grooveboxes, yeah, they're fun, but talk about gear that gets dated! (The sounds anyway)

this has just been destroyed by will.i.am from black eyed peas with pos the worst remix of ive eva heard. the original is a club banger from 2005. def listen.

i use ableton and the mpc to try and do similar music. record sequences into the mpc and then back into ableton without quantise on ableton to retain the swing of the mpc. great way to combine the best of both production tools. love using note repeats with filters and flange effects via ableton and a controller (i.e mpc sliders).

try to learn the basics of subtractor synthesis. understand how lfo's work. and then u can get ur bass's to morph and warble to ur desire.

yeah high tech soul is a great dvd, really gives you an insight into detroit. to say house/techno has no soul is wrong, listen to any KDJ record and tell me that doesnt have soul?

also if any folk that are producing house/techno on the mpc if you could send me a PM of your soundcloud on here would love to hear some stuff. always interested in hearing peoples beats from mpc.
