best way to sequence??

I used to use cubase for sequencing. I am new to the mpc and wanted to know how you guys get the best out of sequencing. Do you create your beats in the 2-4 bar range with all the sampling and lay it out in song mode and just mute certain parts? or do you lay out the drum tracks copy them and then make another drum sequence and add them in where you want them. Just curious on how and which way is best.

There's no best way, there's only a best way for YOU. Personally, 2-8 bars, depending on the mood or groove. All samples are laid on separate tracks, i.e. Track 1 kick, Track 2 snare, Track 3 Hats, etc...This way you can use the track mute screen to mute certain sounds. When I'm ready to track a beat, I use Pro Tools. I track all elements separately, which is good for MIXING.

i used to do this. i stopped when we got grid edit.

i found that having all your drum sounds on different tracks is a NIGHTMARE when it comes to editing them in relation to one another - CONSTANTLY switching tracks to see different notes.

having them all on 1 track makes that plenty easy, plus you can control the "mute" with qlinks - and see them all at once in grid

My final mixdown is done in Pro Tools, not the MPC. Good looking out though.

yeah my final mixdown is in reaper. mixing completely in the mpc is NOT something i want to have to tangle with!!!

im tryin to get this strait. you make the final mixdown in protools, so you have all your tracks, kicks, snares,melody ect. then you turn them into .wav's and put them seperetly into protools so you can see them all at the same time on different tracks. then you add or remove sounds from your mix like that?

ie. you dont use the song2sequence mode in the mpc?

Yeah, basically I slave the MPC to Pro Tools and track the beat sound for sound.

I don't use song2sequence mode on the mpc.

By doing it my way, it's better when my artists come in the studio. If they want to re-arrange something or add, it's better to have everything on screen and not totally pre-done.

dope, thanks man, i think im gona try this on my next beat,
i hate using song to sequence on my mpc (500) then assinging it to a pad after and converting it to a .wav then putting the track on my computer via usb. the last beat i made, i just used song to sequence, on the mpc, then recorded it to my computer though my mixer and into my firewire thingi, and that seemed to work so much better, but i feel you on doin that with every track, im goan try that stuff out!

before i wouild find myself working on a beat for like a month or two just cause i hated finalising it on my mpc so much.

Do you have the JJ OS. I think it's an exclusive feature on that OS.
